Condenser Mic - Kush

Hi All

I just found that the below Condenser Shown Condenser Mic, is available in my Town !!!! Wow, I dont have to travel for 6-7 Hours to get one !!! , lol

I'd like to know, whether this one can be connected directly to the Mic-in or Line-In on my Sound-Card, without using a pre-Amp ? I'm asking this because it uses a 1.5V Battery, which is inserted inside the Mic itself and doesnt need external power source (If I'm right, is it called Phantom-Power ?)

http://ahujaradios.com/product1234.asp?cat=CSM-990, Does this seem good ? Its an Indian Company and is also a bit Costly, so I just wanted to be sure before buying it.

So will this produce enough signal to be used with the Sound-Card ? or do I have to use it with a Pre-Amp ???? Kindly advice

Thanks and Best Regards
Kush

Kush, I'm going to answer your question by referencing it to a dynamic mic (Shure SM58). This mic has an output of -54.5dbv (1.85 mv). Here's the spec.

http://www.shure.com/pdf/specsheets/...dmics/sm58.pdf

In the link to your microphone it shows a selectable output of (-47dbv) 4.5mv or (-53dbv) 2.2mv. This means that this mic has a higher output than the SM58. So if you have any experience using a dynamic mic then you can decide based on that. It seems that sound cards vary WRT how well they work with mics. However, you definitely would need to use the mic-in and not the line-in. Line-in signals need to be in the order of 100mv and up.

I found this page, which is a good reference for sound card hookups....

http://www.epanorama.net/links/pc_so...ml#interfacing

After reading it, I'd have to say I can't actually remember hooking up a dynamic mic to my sound card. I know I plugged my guitar into the mic input and it worked pretty well. But after reading this I'd have to say that I would recommend using a preamp and going into the line-in. I use a low cost Behringer mixer and record usding line-in.

There is even a warning in that link about the possibility of damaging a dynamic mic because many sound cards supply 5v on the "ring" of the jack for powering electret mics. Also the link mentions 10mv as the minimum input level. In general I would bet that it would work, but wouldn't be suprised if the noise level was high.

Hmmm... This is interesting. I checked the AC97 spec that linked to on that page. It shows the sensitivity of the Line-in and Mic-in to be the same if the +20db boost is off. I'll have to try that by plugging my mixer into the mic-in and turning off the +20db. If so then it should be the same volume as the line-in. Never would have thought that. But the manuals for sound cards I've seen don't show input sensitivity.

Kush,

The description from seller says it includes 10 meters of cable with a 3 pin XLR connector. The XLR connector looks like this . I'm pretty sure you can not connect it directly to your computer sound card. You would need this kind of cable to adapt to your computer sound card..... > XLR to 1/8 Inch Cable <

Here's a Google on XLR connectors.

Be sure to have the seller show you the cable and XLR connector. The mic itself sounds pretty good.

Unless someone else knows of anything else ... ????

Hope this helps!

les

Yes Ben, I bought a Shure SM 57, but that was a Dynamic Mic, and I planned to get this Condenser Mic as it was rather cheap. Anyways I think I should'nt buy it now

Kindest Regards

Hi Les !!!

I hope everything is great there !!!

Thankyou so much for caring and for the information , I understand that unless I have such an adapter or converter, I would'nt be able to connect it directly. If I decide to buy it, I'll check everything (though I'm not sure, I'm gonna buy it )

Anyways thankyou so much for all the Care

Kindest Regards and Care
Kush
