Please, Please Help Me Friends !

Hi All

I have bought the Shure-SM 57 and received it just now (It has costed me all my savings). But to my Horror, it doesnt work .

The store has given me a cable which has a XLR End at one end (for the Mic) and the other end has a Mono-Pin (like a Guitar Cable's end). I tried to connect it as :

Shure-SM57 ---->Pre-Amp----->Line-In of my Computer.

But I dont hear anything .

I then connected it to my Guitar-Amp to check if the Mic was ok, but this too produces no Sound. Even tapping on the Mic's mouth doesn't produce any clicks or sound.
Shure-SM57 ----> Guitar Amp

I dont understand, what is that, which I'm doing worng.

1. Does the Mic need any External Power ??? (But there's is'nt any provision for it)
2. How can I check whether the Mic is Working properly ???

Kindly help me out Guys, I'm every sad and worried. I even feel like crying . Waiting desperately for your help

Regds

Kush

Take the mic to a place that uses a pa system where you can plug the mic into the system and test it.

Hi UGB ! Does Pa means Pre-Amp System ??? Is'nt Guitar Amp one ???

Can I connect the Mic directly to my sound-cards Line-in or Mic-in, using necessary adapters (or convertors)?

PA stands for Public Address meaning a sound system that one would use in a church, a school, a night club, or any place where someone has to talk into a microphone and be amplified to be heard. If you have any friends that play in a band, they have a PA system for their singer.

It can't harm the mic. There's GOT to be someplace in town that uses an XLR mic. They have them on counter of some fast food restaurants even. A radio station, tv station, school? Do you live in a town without a school?

No UGB, its not a very small place, but I dont have access to such Public places. Anyways I'll try my best, or I'll take it to the Music-Store itself. Thanks for caring sir.

Kindest Regards

My RODE mic requires 'phantom power' to work, which it receives from the Berhringer mixer I plug it into. I then plug the mixer to the computer. Does an SM57 require phantom power?

I checked the www.shure.com site for specs and the 57 does not require phantom power. So we need to look at how you're setting up and connecting to the PC. I saw the diagram ....mic - pre-amp - pc ...

Kush, are you using Windows as your OS? If so what version?

For XP ...
In your Windows .....
Open Control Panel
Select Sounds & Audio

Slide volume control to High
Uncheck Mute
Check - Place Volume Icon in the taskbar

Click the Audio Tab
Make sure your sound device is listed as the default device for Sound Playback and Sound Record.

Select the Voice Tab
Make sure your sound device is listed as the default device for Voice Playback and Voice Record.

Apply/Ok and close the window.

Open the volume control icon in task tray.

Be sure Line-In is not muted. Be sure Volume and Wave sliders are all the way to the top. Make sure the WAVE is not muted!.

IN the Volume Options Window, click Options & Properties. Click the Record radio button and check all boxes. Make sure your Mixer Device lists your sound card device.

Hi Captain Kirk

Thanks for caring. No, the SM57 doesnt require a phantom power, its a dynamic mic. Does a mixer do the job of Pre-Amplification too ? Will it eliminate th noises too ?

Lots of Regards

Kush

Well the dogs woke me so here I am.......

"...whether a need a Mixer for goor quality recording. Will a soundcard better than a ON-Board one give better results ????"

Yes, on both accounts. However, first things first. While the on-board sound card may not be of studio quality, it should do just fine to start with.

The mixer/console is where to start. I highly reccomend Behringer Products and for the money, this is a great deal. The Behringer EU802.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ers?sku=631238

It allows pretty good volume control, on board effext (very limited), Hi /Mid and Lo range control. Plus panning abilities. Room for two mic's, main outs .... and a few other items.

You will also need some patch cables and adapters to plug into the sound card. Be sure to inquire about the electric power and that it matches the electric power in your house.

..... i'm off to Oz again....... oh sorry 'bout that

Les

  To UGB and Les

Dear Sirs

Kindly note that the pre-amp\Mixer I'm using now is this one :
http://ahujaradios.com/product1234.asp?cat=MMX-50

As the US products are very costly when shipped to India (the shipping costs more than the product) and some companies are not allowing to ship their products to India, I have to depend on this Indian Company (Its the only renowned one here in India too !!!) I know I'm bothering very much, please dont get irritated with me. Please suggest which of the following 5-6 Mixer Consoles is needed. I really dont understand these technical explanations. Please suggest me :

Kind Regards

Kush
