Two Questions

First, I downloaded som VST plugins and I cant get them to work right. One is a Guitar Tuner and the other is a Guitar amp simulator. I use audacity to record and I put the plugins in the same spot as all the other ones that audacity uses, but when I try to use them in audacity it doesn'r look anything like the pics on the VST site. It's like its not formatted right or something.

Second, I've been using an Electret Condenser Microphone from Sony. Model # ECM-MS907. I can't seem to ever get the levels just right for recording vocals. If I Set it to where most of the song sounds good then the higher/louder parts are maxing out the mic and sound distorted. If I set the mic levels lower to prevent maxing it out, then the rest of the song is too low. Any Ideas how to get the levels better. I just plug it directly into the mic input on my soundcard. Should I plug it into my guitar amp and then run my amp to the sound card?

Yeah I downloaded it and put it in the same place. Is there something else I have to do with it?

Cool   Vocals may need compression and eq.

That mic is a stereo mic with a stereo jack. If you're sound card mic input is not a stereo jack, then you may be shorting one side and introducing some extra distortion. I don't know that for sure, but just a thought.

It sounds like you need some compression. You may want to use a mixer or stereo pre-amp with built in compression, or process the track with a compression effect/plug-in. Compression is commonly used on vocals, along with a little eq to help smooth out the lower and higher energy parts of a track.

Peace,
Rico

It does have a sterio jack and I wondered why it always recorded only on one channel. Where could I get a sterio preamp? Is it something I could create using electronics around the house, like a guitar amp or cd player/radio? I can't really afford to go buy rec equipment right now. keep in mind I'm a civil servant and the pay aint grand! at the studio they have an Mbox but those things are like 200-300 dollars.

Shouldn't be anything else required. If you point me to the VSTs you are using I'll give them a try. There are many VSTs that simply don't work in Audacity, even with the enabler.

FreeAmpSE and GTune are the two I'm trying to use.

Oh yeah, I see the problem now. I don't think Audacity can handle a plugin like FreeAmp. You can tweak all those parameters, but you're flying blind really.

Have you tried Krystal Audio Engine? It's got much better VST support, and is also free.

Looks like a very cool plugin if you can find something it works with.

Well i've got both the 1.2.3 and the new beta version. I tried it on both with the same results. Thanks sledj, I've been looking at kristal today and I was wanting to talk to someone who has used it to see if it was worth it.

I know a few people who record with Audacity because of its simplicity, then they open the file in Kristal to apply VST effects.

Can't go wrong using both, considering the price.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
