Reaper Question
When recording in Audacity, the default scaling of the waveform display shows it clipping when the peak value hit's the edge of the window. When I record in reaper the waveform looks small compared to the window, but still seems to have plenty of volume. I was wondering if any of the experienced Reaper users can tell when the waveform starts clipping by looking at the size of the waveform.

Hi Fly, I don't use reaper but I was bored and d/led it just for kicks. Yes there seems to be no indicator line but there are indicator lights for identifying clipping. It's late here and the mrs is in bed so I didn't chance trying a recording take, but heres a vid I did of cranking the volume{muted my speakers for the wife..I'm no dummy lol} until the indicator lights up on playback, just to show what I'm yaking about. They{indicators} turn red in your meter and in the mixer.
They're supposed to be set to "on" as default but to be sure go to actions> options>preferences>appearance>then in meters section be sure the tick box is checked next to "sticky clip indicators"
On the wav size to window ratio, you can go to veiw> expand selected track{s} minimize others...or....use the "+" button at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar to increase the track window.
Hope this helps, considering my very limited use of reaper and that it didn't really pertain your last line in your thread starter.

That's very strange, I just tested it here and the waveform showed the peaks. Both when I recorded and when I imported an mp3 file.
Samplitude has a feature called wave zooming, which makes the waveform bigger or smaller, but I don't think Reaper has that feature. I just searched on the Reaper forum and nothing came up.
Maybe try posting on the Reaper forum and/or try downloading the latest version (in case you're using an older version).

On the recording level sown in X4SD's video, you will see numbers inthe VU - if you treat 12 as normal peak and anything above this as headroom.... pushed any further the 0.0 will light up red if clipping.
A digital signal doesn't need to be as close to 0.0 as possible - thats a throwback from analogue thinking...

Yeah, I just looked at the manual. I guess you just use the clipping LEDs. Too bad it can't use the midi as a record controller.

Hit Control-Shift-Up Arrow to zoom the waveform height with constant track height
Hit Control-Up Arrow to Zoom the track height with constant waveform size relative to tracksize
Refer to the picture below:
*doh, can't post a pic yet*
hopefully someone will show one for me
There will be a redlight lit up where the arrow is pointing after your recording which will stay there to indicate you clipped during the recording. It will normally stay lit up until you click on it, so that you will be notified.
Get to know the K-System ( sorry it wont let me post links, but look at digido.com for this )
We record WAY too loud nowdays. Using reaper's VU meter to stay at 0VU (which in todays world of 24 bit converters leaves PLENTY of headroom) will save you from much of this frustration

Can you give me an example? Midi control surfaces can arm/disarm, start and end playback in reaper, but I may be reading your post wrong

That sounds like what I am talking about. I want to be able to use pedals on a midi floorboard to control Reaper for recording and layering tracks. I looked at the manual and found the info that you were referring to. I'll give it a try.
And thanks for the response on the waveform zoom.
