Cheap Soundproofing?

Hey, I'm moving into a new place soon and there is a lot of work to be done regarding my home studio. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas or materials that would be a good way to get things soundproofed a little better. It doesn't need to be awesome, just something that will dampen the sound bouncing all over the room. I was thinking about coating the walls with bed matresses or something of the sort. Any Ideas? I'd love to hear them.. Thanks in advance. ~Kyle~

You can probably get some foam pads in various sizes and use them. You could likely find something like that at a crafts store. Be aware, though, that you don't want to cover everything or you get a dead room which can be just as bad as a noisy one.

I'd concentrate on the corners. I record in a small room with a sofa. I usually take the cushions off of the sofa and put them in the corner of the room. I also place a couple of rolled up futons in the corners as well. Chris is right, though. You don't want it completely dead.

Here's a url to check out...

and google Ethan Winer - he's got lots of good info on home recording studios.

I recently sound proofed a room at a local rehersal studio, I used the following:

Egg Cartons - Find old cardboard egg cartons and you are onto a great soundinging room as it both absorbs sound and bounces sound around giving you a great studio echo/reverb feel. Stick them all over the walls...everywhere!

Curtains - We bought some heavy curtains from a charity shop and hung them over the windows. Perfect!

Thick rug - Big hairy rug from charity shop, place under anything that creates vibration

Using those we got a nice sound from the room but still damping the sound.
