how not to pack a microphone

Last week I found myself on a business trip to the Boston area. I took some free time and drove the rental car out to Mercenary Audio - a really high end audio recording equipment shop and studio. They mostly do mail order but I phoned ahead to see if they'd let me drop by. Super nice people. I bought a Josephson C42 microphone which is a small diameter diaphragm condenser mic that gets rave reviews.
It comes in a leatherette pouch with a pretty cool plastic mic holder. The mic itself is about 4" long and about an inch in diameter.

Anyway, long story short - on the way home I originally put it in my guitar case to go with the luggage on the airplane but at the last minute I took it out and put it in my briefcase - didn't trust the baggage handlers.

The mic was loose in the pouch and rubbing against the mic holder so I inserted the mic in the holder and put it back in the pouch.

Then I went through airport security...

The microphone in its plastic holder looked exactly like a little snub nose revolver. It caused quite the stir . But I managed to convince them that I wasn't much of a threat - I don't think I'm on the black list.

Doug,
Yes security can be a bit overdone. Thats why they frisk old ladies.
Did they figure out where the bullets come out?

I do suppose the job is quite stressful in these times.
