A lot of folks start out (and many just stay with) Audacity. I still use it occasionally myself and don't experience any latency issues at all. With Kristal, the delay might be fixed by installing and running ASIO4All.

It will most likely be the VST (dll) effects that are causing the latency.

If clean record, without using any of the Plugin VST effects, do you still get the latency?

VST (.dll) effects eat cpu cycles like crazy. If you are going to be running them, you'd better have a fast machine with at least 1GB RAM, preferably more. I use VST effects only during mixing- I record everything dry first to avoid latency issues.

what PC are you using ie core duo, dual core single core? what speed cpu, how much memory? There is going to be a delay but the scale is dependant on how powerful the pc is and how many other processes are running.

Hi Jimmy,
You will need to set ASIO4ALL for it to work efficiently... first off make sure Kyrstal is using ASIO4ALL as the audio interface (engine > preferences asio4all > your soundcard listed as ASIO input). Then set ASIO4ALL as described in this thread ...
