what do i need to do to run myself a nice guitar setup on a new guitar?

Read through the tech forum. First you need to establish if the string height is correct. Then you check the intonation. If that needs to be adjusted you then go back and check string height again. If you have no experience with this kind of thing, you might want to have a tech do it the first time.
An allen key for the truss rod and a screwdriver for the saddles should be all you need in the way of tools.

Some saddles use an allen or hex wrench and acoustics are a whole other ball-o-wax.

I was at an open mic last night at 2 guys showed up to play w/o a guitar so I let them use mine. Both commented on how nice the guitar was to play. I'm fairly convinced that most first timers at setting up a guitar are subconciously hesitant because they've probably actually played so few guitars that were set up correctly. How do you adjust to something you've never really experienced before? Just keep playing with it and figure out what feels good to you. Once you know what you're doing, you'll never WANT someone to adjust your guitars other than you.
