Custom Paintjobs
I am thinking of having my Squier Strat painted and was wondering if there were any templates where I could try some ideas before having them priced up? Best I have managed so far is finding pics of white ones and modding them in Paintshop?
a bit like these?
Been listening to too much Skynyrd and Drive-by Truckers

yeh, saw that thanks but I'd rather not pay for a template, and don't really want to do it myself.
What do you think of my ideas above?

Custom paint job
Biker Jim
The Blue with White Xs on a black background is pretty interesting. The Confederate flag, to me, is a bit , passe. Old fashioned, too retro toward the Lynard Skynard times perhaps....but that's just me. But I don't see why doing your ideas like that wouldn't help whomever you have do it.
Good Luck!

why not just get some colors of vinyl tape and make it changable-besides that preserves your guitars resale value.

Squire's aren't overy expensive as I understand. You could maybe get one of those artist at the fairs and such that airbrush t-shirts and things. Who knows what you could get fro one of them. Then just shoot it with clear.
Just thinking out of the box.

The "Blue with White Xs" is not just interesting, rather, it is the Scottish Saltire. The much beloved symbol of Scottish Nationals, Scottish ex-patriots and though we be called Billy's Boys (hillbillys), the Ulster Scots of Appalachia.
Of course, upon deeper inspection, the Confederate Battle Flag as illustrated, closely resembles the Scottish Saltire. Infact, the Scottish Saltire was the inspiration for the Confederate Battle Flag. Hence the Bonnie Blue.
While the Confederate Battle Flag is eye-catching, flamboyant and much maligned, it is certainly not passe. However, the blue and white of the Scottish Saltire is striking in it's abundance of blue and yet relaxingly reserved. The white cross of Saint David upon a commanding blue background is a beautiful sight to behold and cherish. I wipe a tear from my eye. Let a piper amaze your grace by piping Amazing Grace.
And then, after a serious riff of modal notes in tripletts and the pipers pipe in, the crowd goes absolutely fervent with giddyness, expectations and Patriotism for the Motherland.
I recommend a single, full blown Scottish Saltire and not the many small "blue with white X's" motif. But then I'm biased.
Keep it tribal. The Castle Stirling is home.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a family link to a clan when I got married (The Pitkeithley's - Gran's maiden name- were too small) so it was Black watch tartan.
And as I said I've been listening to lots of Skynyrd, (and I like the waving flag rather than the flat look usually used, trickier to do though) as I'm trying to learn Sweet Home Alabama, but can't get the first little fill to sound right....grrr! Yes I've only been playing 7 months or so!
Do people prefer plain scratch plates, or a seethrough showing the full pattern?
Here's a couple of Saltire ideas, I really like the little flag graphic and was sure I saw a similar rebel flag version but can't find it.

Keep at that Lynard intro! You need to use a liitle muting with the palm of your hand and get the timing just right ..... not as easy as it looks, but worth it when you get it! I like the see through scratch plates like the Strat EC used for the Crossroad's concert myself. What's happened to the headstock decal on the Strat in your last picture? At first I thought the pic was laterally reversed, like when you print a negative from the wrong side, but I'm not sure now ... Ah Cannae Nae ken it!
Actually, I wouldn't mind having a go myself. I got the book from that site I pointed you to. Just waiting for that 36 hour day to be invented .......

The pic is a reversed leftie one, good spot! On the first pics I'd added a new head pic!
Do you like the style better?
Is the book any good then? Or does it just show you how to use the templates?

Sorry for the late reply Biker, must've missed that one. Yeah, I think the book (download as a PDF) is pretty good. It goes fairly well into how the guy got started, how he did some of his guitars, do's and dont's for beginners and gives a lot of information on technique. Pretty much step by step. I'd say anyone with common sense and a bit of DIY savvy should be able to get a good result from following his stuff.
Main thing that's holding me up from giving it a go, apart from lack of time, is that some of the materials he use's are not available here in Australia. Shipping them is a problem because they are all classified dangerous goods, inflammables and whatnot requiring specialised (expensive) handling. I don't know if that would also be a problem for you in the UK.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
