Can Anybody Help?

Ok I tried to post this once and the system went down on the send. here goes, I need some tech help/advise about repairing an electric guitar i have. It's branded Tanara, actuall a nice solid nice playing little Strat shaped guitar, with a solid ash neck, (the only reason I am even bothering to try repairs) It is solid black with a natural wood neck and although I searched the web for information I can't locate a model number or any tech specs for it. It's design is two wide pups, possibly humbuckers, a large -three way switch, obviously for front, both, rear selection, a single volume and single tone, but also mysteriously a smaller single throw switch that I am uncertain about function, perhaps a coil splitter? I would like to as inexpensivly as possible refurbish this guitar, as it plays rather well and has some nice setups-bridge ,tuners, ect.--any advise ? The guitar's electronics are the problem-they cut in and out-and are unreliable.

You need to clean your pots and check the soldered conections. UGB Can talk you through it.

I'd look at the input jack first.

Then I'd look at the switch, especially the 'mystery' switch.

Take off the back cover and see if there is a battery in there. If so you have on board electronics and need a new battery. More likely is a split coil switch. On cheapy guitars with low end pups your not going to hear much difference. I have a no name with split coils and there is next to no difference with the switch either way.

Thanks AT, I have had the pick plate off several times-already did some solder repair under there--it has no preamping battery--do you think the two fat pups are humbs?-the look sort of weird-and they are covered so it's hard to tell for sure-i guess I should try to open one and see-that may clue me to how that switch should work i suppose.

I'm going to suggest you put the pickup selector switch in the neck position, then try the mini switch by tapping a coin or a pick on the BRIDGE pickup. I'll bet it comes on in one position and goes off in the other. This allows you to add the bridge pickup to the 4th and 5th positions of the selector switch giving you 7 positions.
