How exactly did it cut through? Did a piece fall off?
I had my nut crack and a piece fell off, I had to take it to a repairman and have a new one installed.

Here is UGBs fix.
"
To take a stab at adjusting the nut yourself, remove the string, aquire the smallest amount of Super Glue you can on the end of a toothpick and carefully work the Super Glue into the nut slot attempting to just raise the bottom surface of it a tad. Let it dry thoroughly then string her up and see what you have. If too much glue was applied you can file it down, carefully, to the right height."
Hope that helps.

The best solution is a new nut, but I have repaired quite a few with super glue and bone dust. I make some bone dust with an old nut or saddle and a file. Fill the slot on the nut with the dust, then add a drop of superglue to the dust. It will harden almost instantly. Make sure it's good and dry and then re-file the slot. You will need a file that can cut the thin slot required.

Bone dust is very bad for the lungs. Good ventilation is a must. Graphite dust is the most dangerous of all. You need a very good mask as well to save your lungs if your working on a graphite nut.

I'd replace the nut and yes, some are better than others. On the better end you can get one made of a graphite material. On the cheap end a plain plastic one.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
