Recording from an Acoustic (Please Help)

Hi Friends

My old acoustic has a built in pick-up (the one placed under the saddle). And hence when i plug my acoustic to a Amp or my pc (for recording) , I dont get a clear sound. I mean the "screeches" & "Scratches" produced when the fingers rub against the strings while playing are amplified so much that the whole thing sounds horrible

Is it because i'm playing wrongly or should i opt for recording with a mic. Please help me out guys.

But, when i play my electric (connected to the same system) there's no such problem. I'm really confused regd this.

Lots of Regds

1. Using an undersaddle pickup to record direct ONLY is going to produce a very thin, nasaly, acoustic tone. I recorded all of the guitars that way for this song:

You get MUCH better results using your pickup AND a mic to record, or just a mic. A mic can make even the cheapest guitar sound great. This song was recorded using a mic; the acoustic guitar sounds MUCH better:

2. Switch to a coated string to kill your finger squeak like Elixyr Polywebs.

Thank You so much for caring Sir. I just wanted to know a few things more :

What are coated strings ? Are they easily available ? (Cause i've never seen them)

and i saw a mic at my music store, it was a SHURE mic for recording acoustic instruments. Model-No : PG-57. Will it be good sir? Should i go for it ?

The sure57 is the industry standard for a mike for acoustic.. One of the best you can get, It costs about 100 U.S. I hate to think what the markup is over there.

Hi Marty, How're you doing ?

It actually costs about Rs.2800 (64 USD) in the store i visited recently. I'm not sure its the one you have mentioned. It looked exactly like the image i've attached. Is it good enough ?

There are only 2 or 3 that can match a sm shure 57. I can't think of the names of them They are not that much less so I would lean towards buying the shure. Wait to get some feed back from UGB. He may know some cheaper brands that will do it.

The SM57 sets the standard for dynamic mics. That said, I use a condensor mic to record. Dynamic mics can handle higher pressure waves and don't require a power source to operate. Condensor mics are better suited for lower pressure waves and do require a power source to operate. I'd say you can't go wrong with the SM57; it's one mic that can record virtually ANYTHING from acoustic instruments to amplifiers to even vocals. Sure, there are individual mics that can probably do one of those better than an SM57, but I don't think you'll find ONE mic that does all THREE of those as well as the SM57.

You don't need a pre-amp but I would suggest a small mixer or at least a DI box. You're going to have to go from lo-z XLR to hi-z 1/8" phono mini plug.
