I play a standard tele through a Fender head, and Marshall cab. I decided to experiment the other day by raising the pickups, hoping for a "hotter" sound. I turned each of the screws about 1/4 of a turn and plugged in. It doesn't sound hot at all it sounds muddy. I plan to lower them again, but I was wondering if someone could tell me how high they are normally, so I can get it as close to exact as possible. Any advice is appreciated.

If you go to Fender.com, they have some reference pages with "setup info" for various Fender guitars. In those pages they give the recommended heights for pickups (as well as a lot of other useful information).
