I Think Santa's Listening

I really want to get into recording music. I have nothing but a $2 computer microphone. I posted recently inquiring about the Tascum TNT bundle. It seems that dear hubby has been doing some research and is asking me lots of questions and I don't know anything about it. It appears though that he thinks I need to update my computer first. So, I ask the experts out there...what do I need for compter requirements. For example, I have a 1 ghz system, but he said its not fast enough for some of the equipment and how many inputs (USB?) do I need? So, if I was going to ask for the ideal computer system, that would allow me to expand as I learn what am I doing, what would you get? I play acoustic guitar, which is what I will mainly be recording. However, my daughter has an electric guitar and she may be interested in recording as well.

Thanks.

Sounds like your computer is very dated. In my opionion any computer you can buy new now should be more than sufficient for home recording. Some may suggest that you need a nice sound card, but I would recommend bypassing the sound card in the computer and going with sometype of external interface/mixer. You can take a look and the recently lengthy thread by mcarrol in the home recording forum for more info on this.

You should consider getting one with a firewire interface since a lot of the new mixer interfaces use that instead of USB.

For recording electric, I have seen several guitar cords with an embedded USB interface so you can just plug your electric straight into a USB port on your PC. I haven't tryed one of these yet though.

You should be fine recording with something like a Behringer UB802 into your sound card.

Buy Behringer EURORACK UB802 Mixer online at Musician's Friend

You may be limited once you get into editing and recording multiple tracks, because of the speed of your computer.
