Home made guitar electronics setup advice and opinions please :)
Any help on this would be great
I am building my own guitar and was wondering about the electronic options.
I am making the body to house 3 pickups, two humbuckers at the neck and bridge, and one single coil in the middle. I want to be able to control these with a 5 way selector, as in Stratocasters, but also to be able to control both the tone and volume of the selected pickups individually. My question is this, is this possible?
As a side note, the pickups I am planning on using are 2 p90 imitators (SPH90 Phat Cat P90) and a Stratocaster single coil pickup in the center. Do you think this will sound good at all, and will the option of using a single coil give any added versatility or may it just be unnecessary?
Thanks for any help.
PS Iv'e attached a picture to myself clearer.

Thanks Fly135 and JayJay, those links are really useful . I have yet to find any information on the setup I would like with 2 tone and 2 volume controls which makes me think it may not be possible. But I can’t complain, you guys have helped a lot

My thought is that you should stick to the two P-90s. People sometimes put a strat pickup between humbuckers so that they can use it to get a single coil sound, but P-90s ARE single coil, so a strat pickup wouldn't help so much. Also, if you bought the P-90s as a neck and bridge set, they will probably buck hum when you use both at once. Stick a strat pickup between them, and it would sort of buck hum when used in combination with one, but increase hum when used with the other.
With 2 pickups, the wiring is a cinch -- you could even skip the switch if you wanted, since a pickup with the volume at zero is about the same as one which is switched out of circuit. With 3 pickups, you could come up with a switching arrangement which would work, but it would be really complicated, since a strat pickup has different impedance than a P-90, which has different impedance than a strat pickup in parallel with a P-90. So I'd recommend keeping it simple. Save the fancy design for when you're an established luthier, and need to wow people with a masterpiece.
