My prefered action setting is not allowed
Hey all. Just found this forum and I figured I'd pick at your brains a bit. So, I have a Mexican strat that I've been playing and poking around with the setup and I've found a really comfortable action for the saddles. It's 2/64" on the treble side at the 17th fret and 4/62" on the bass side (I use a radius gauge for the rest.) Only one problem, I fret out on the high E only when I bend at the 15th-18th frets. Its seems as though my guitar won't allow for this action. I suspect the problem is fret wear. I don't think it's the neck because it looks perfect to me and at those high positions, truss rod adjustments are least effective. So, I just put the saddles back at 4/64" where I had them. Is refretting the only solution? Tell me what you guys think.

Have a tech look at it. The frets might just need to be leveled and dressed.

How much do you think a job like that would cost?

Wow. See, that's why I try to do as much work on my guitar as I can by myself.

Yeah - but fret leveling and dressing is best left to somebody who knows what they're doing. Messing with something like that could ruin a neck and end up costing you a lot more in the long run for a complete re-fret.

Definitely, I agree. What I'm saying is I try to get the easy stuff done like the setup and unfortunately leave the repairs to a pro.

+1. A basic setup is fairly easy - even easier when you have the right tools like you seem to (radius gauge, etc.). I don't mind messing with those, but I wouldn't want to try fret levelling, refretting or any of that stuff....although one of these days I might get ahold of a junk neck, buy the right tools from Stew-Mac and start learning how to do it.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
