You need to choose what sound you want to get from your guitar. Clapton, hendrex,SRV play or played stratocaster style guitars which mean single coils. If you look at the pics of my guitars you will see that the strat is single coil and the alleykat semi hollowbody has humbucker pickups. Jimmy Page plays a les paul, very popular style of guitar. Single coils are chimey while humbucks have a fat thick sound(B.B.King). Telecasters are another one. Very popular with country players. They sound very bright and tend to have a glassy clean tone so it takes a bit more work to make them play dirty.Keith Richards plays one.
I posted a link to a site selling a good guitar at a good price, but it is a bit of an oddball in shape and colour.Look for it in the show your gear section.
It is tough to get anything decent for under 250-350 bucks U.S.IMO unless you get lucky at a blowout sale or a pawnshop. Go to Musicians friend and take a look at what they have. Pick a couple that you think are good and link them to here and we will give you our opinion of what is the best bet. Give me the answers to the above questions on style plus your price range and I will ask some friends of mine who are very savvy about buying guitars. BTW. The real cheap guitars you see on ebay, for the most part, are made up of pressboard so that has a bad effect on tone, not what you want.
