Wouldn't It Be Nice
Okay, it's a hypothetical situation but one that could be a reality for someone sometime.
Your'e given a shopping voucher at your local guitar center to the value of $5000.00 (gotta be realistic so can't make it too much money)
You have the choice of guitar/s or amp, pedals, or whatever.
I'd probably go for a good tube amp. Maybe the Vox AC30 Valve combo and perhaps a nice steel string acoustic or nylon string. If there's enough money left, I might buy an effects pedal (wah, wah)
So, start shopping! What would you buy?

First order of business would be a Gibson SG Standard in Heritage Cherry. I would also be looking at the Taylor T5 Slimline acoustic in Koa wood. That would give me about $400 left to get a somewhat decent amp.

Matty,
What is the two things a guitarist can keep? Picks and Girlfriends...
and while we are on the subject. What do you call a guitarist that has just lost his girlfriend? Homeless...
Anyway...
I would go big on a PRS 513, and if I had some money left I would get a Fender Twin Reverb amp... Maybe even the Vox AC30...
I am not sure what the 513 would be at a GC... Over here is is more than $5000...

I think I'd head over to the Collings wall at my local dealer and pickout a nice Collings Dread. Or perhaps add a couple K and get a Goodall Royal Hawaiian.

Well, I would start with getting a VOX ToneLabSE for effects, then I would probably get an EMU laptop audio set up (replacement soundcard, etc.), drop about 350 or so on some decent mics- that takes care of the first thousand. Then I would wander over to the keyboard section and grab a decent full-sized midi keyboard with weighted keys. That would probably bring my total up to about $3500. Then I would probably pick up a decent bass for about $400. Whatever was left over would be spent on the nicest 12-string I could get for the remaining money.

I would start a Guitars in the Classroom program or something similar in our community, my bet is that I could get 50 Rogues and probably get a couple of hundred kids a year taking up guitar in high school just because they remember how cool their elementary school teacher was when she played guitar to sing those silly songs.
I am perfectly happy with everything I have right now, to hear a battle of the middle school guitarists rocking the stages at the county fair would be better than any pile of gear for me, in my mind...
I don't know how it is in your area but school music programs are cut to the bone around here. All the arts programs are always starving, the private schools are about as bad as the public schools unfortunately.
Thanks for posting this today, I read it and browsed the MF site, (like I don't know it by heart, eh?), for about 20 minutes and this is what I eded up deciding. Sometimes silly posts on line do help us to refocus and ask ourselves what is really important and what isn't. New gear is fun but I have plenty right now, what I need is more talent and/or more practice. What I want is for lots more folks to find the joy I found so late in life through learning to play guitar and sing along. I would love to be able to help this along so maybe I'll buy a lotto ticket tonight and see what happens, wish me luck...

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
