Your best bet would be to do a search on U.K Ebay for guitars up to 100 pounds. That will give you an idea of what is available in your country.
I had a quick look. I didn't recognize a lot of the brands. Tanglewoods are in your price range. A Norman B-18 or higher are real solid work horse guitars, Canadian made so you may be able to find them over there.
Find a large British on line guitar shop that has reviews by customers of guitars they have purchased.

What sort of music are they into and what age group are they in.

Argos have some budget sets.

At this sort of price range, you`ll not go far wrong with a Yamaha - have a look at this one:

I started with a Hohner guitar starter classical from Argos. but it was'nt set up. so I would get yourself to a GS, it's not a bad budget for a starter guitar, you should get something decent.

Marty I played a Tangle wood the other day and I was surprised at the tone from the guitar. Especially at that price range... It was the first and only tanglewood I have ever played on, but it was really nice.

Makepeace, I dont think you can go wrong with the Yamaha though... I know they have very solid guitars, not the best but very solid guitars. You could have alook at the Washburns in that price range as well, they have nice guitars.

I have a Yamaha 310 sitting here at the moment which I have just re-strung. All I can say is if you can find a better guitar for the money then buy it and then let the rest of us know what it is. The 310 can be strummed or picked, it can be gentled or knocked about the room (within reason) and will stand up to a beginner without problems. I've been a beginner for years, I should know. If they had been around when I started playing I could have saved myself a lot of grief and would have been a better player than I am now.

Congrats! I would recommend taking it into a shop for a set up so that it is ready to go when you give it! Nothing is worse than having a guitar thats not set up and hard to play...alot of people give up quickly because of this!

If everything has a point, well then I must have one, too.
