Guitar Tuner Suggestions

heya,

OK, so i'm convinced that my tuner is out of whack. It is the one that came with my starter package, and i just don't trust it anymore. I have looked online and all the tuners seem to have mixed reviews.

So, does anyone have any suggestions as to a decent tuner, with a price tag of 30 dollars or less? Any help would be much appreciated!

I've been using a Korg GA-20 for years, it works great.

Cow0--

Howdy. I saw your original post. Welcome aboard. Plenty of great guitar help here. Your tuner. This is an interesting subject for a newcomer to the guitar.

Acoustic or electric? My take on a tuner is that it's better to get a tuner that you can use that will help develop your ear. Back in the old days, I started with a pitch pipe. I used a tuning fork, too. This helps put the note in your head and then you get to practice translating that to the string that you hear. Pretty good stuff.

But there are may tuners available these days. If you're playing electric or plugged in, you can by tuners that are stomp boxes that are in line with the guitar before it gets to the amp. These are visual-type tuners where you can see via light strobes if your string is 'in tune'. It's a subjective method, but it works (and it's pretty much invaluable in the live setting).

I use a Sabine Contact Chromatic Auto Tuner on my acoustic these days. But these only work for an acoustic. If it's an electric, you might spend some good money and get something like a Boss tuner. Just about anything will work. Just read some reviews first.

Thanks for the responses guys!

And solidwalnut, your point about a pitch pipe is well taken. I completely agree that training my ear is a very important endeavor, and i shouldn't solely rely on an electric tuner to tune my guitar.

Thanks again for the help.

Question: (I have a Korg GA-30) Can these electronic tuners go out of tune ? Somewhere on this site I noticed an on line tuner, I guess I could check my Korg with that just to make sure. Cheers.

Well, those tuners won't go out of tune, but the tuning on them can be altered. A 440Hz can be changed to A 339Hz and so on.

The online tuner link is at the top of this page.

I love my little Korg CA 30. Electric plug in, acoustic, or audible tone (I use this a lot with my ukes), whichever suits you. I think I got it at a large guitar center for about $15 on special. Even if you want a fancier one later one, at $15 bucks it'll make a good spare.

I have a Arion Hu-8300 tuner can't recall how much I paid but it does the job for me, however my son who is a very good guitarist tunes by ear and either of my guitars (Martin D28 and Ovation Balladeer) always sound much better for his efforts.

Anyone here who's not confused, probably doesn't understand what's going on.

if you can plug your guitar into your computer.. APTuner is a GREAT freeware/shareware program. It is shareware, but there is no time limit on it, so it works for free forever.

I have had a Intellitouch PT1 Tuner for a while and I like it a lot. A bit more than you want to spend but I find it a perfect tuner for my guitars.

I have a BOSS TU-80 Tuner with metronome.
It's not bad but I hope to upgrade sometime.
