getting that sound

Hi i am pretty new to the guitar learning songs by punk bands e.g the stooges. My amp is a small squire with bass, treble and volume also a button to give distortion. The problem is it sounds to distorted. What kind of effects pedal would be best to get the distorted punk sound but not extreme like the amp sound which is to much. thanks

Get a bad monkey distortion pedal. You can dial in the level you want and it is only 40 bucks.
Oops, I meant O.D. Here is a link with a demo file.

I have the Bad Monkey and love it. But I'm not sure that you will get the punk sound from it. It's what I would call mild controllable distortion. I also have a Danelectro Fab Tone that has more distortion but is less controllable. Here's a cheap one on eBay...

If your any good with a soldering iron, you can make your own. I put a link on this forum a while back to a site with schemos for all kinds of pedals. Doesn't Oz have anyone manufacturing pedals over there?

I'd be inclined to save up for a new amp.

Without a doubt get a new AMP!

Last week my small Fender AMP went bang and it the best thing that has ever happened to me and my guitar. Replaced it with a Roland Cube 30 and the sounds from it are great

I`d go with the new amp option too and I`d also second the Cube series, if you are on a budget and can live with modelled sounds. I`ve used a Cube 60 for a while now, and while it may not compete head to head with the amps it aspires to emulate, it has a good range of usable sounds on it.

Will

After re reading your post, get a better amp. Putting pedals in front of that low end amp would be like putting bling on a pinto trying to increase its' performance.

You could always look at the Behringer amps with effects onboard if you are on a tight budget. For the money they sound OK.
