Resonator question

Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas about resonator guitars. I'm a beginning slide player looking for a cheap, yet nice sounding, metal bodied resonator. I have heard that Johnsons are made by exploited Chinese kids and I don't want to support that.........anyone hear good things about Regals?
Thanks,
Leslie

Hi Leslie. Thanks for joining.

Sorry, I can't help with those brands. Resonators are odd ... I once had a Dobro D-33 as a sponsorship deal. It was the dullest sounding resonator I'd ever heard. Since then, I acquired a hand made resonator, the first that Michael Palm (of Brisbane, Australia) had built, and it's as bright and sweet sounding as they come. It's got a wooden body. They really are individual; make sure you play it before you buy.

Use heavy strings and a heavy slide if you want maximum sustain and tone. I use 16-18-24-34-44-54! You may not want to go that heavy, but you won't need to be bending anything with a slide on your pinky, so give it whirl with something other than 'slinky' gauge strings. They make you sound like a mosquito.

Having a Luthier make it to specification would make the best sounding, but sadly most expensive...

Guitar: 1) Behringer Stratocaster; Webstrings Memphis Electric Xlight strings; Dunlop Picks

2) Ibanez TCY-10 Talman Series; Elixir Light strings.

I know a guy who picked up a Martin for a good price. He is not sure if the active electronics are gonna cut it. He is talking to the tech guys about it. I will post more when I know.

Hi I think the Martin would be too expensive. The regal and Johnsons, in fact most non custom resos are made in China or two factories in Korea. The Korean ones are a better quality. You would need to talk to a dealer that sells resos exclusively to be able to know exactly where each reso came from. Check Ebay, there are always resos there. I don't think your safe even with fender. They job out their resos',probably Asia.

hi I asked around for you. The consences is that Korea doen't use child labour so look at Deans,Samicks, Epiphones, most Johnsons are Korean. Liberty guitars are made in florida so thats safe. I don't know prices. I hope this helps. I have a Hensel dobro made in Toronto in 1921 so I am pretty sure mine is child labour free. good luck
