Acoustic Sound Hole Cover Thing ... ??
Was watching the DVD, Concert For George, and noticed these acoustic soundhole covers on Tom Petty's and Paul McCartney's guitars.
They covered the full hole ...... brb .... hmmm.... just watched it again.
Petty is playing a Guild D212 12 string. The sound hole item is black and completely covers the sound hole. It apparently can be adjusted as it looks like it has a lip or groove that fits both on the top and inside the guitar and covers up the rosette around the sound hole.
Anyone got a clue? What's it's purpose?
Les

Tommy Emmanuel uses one also. I believe they are for reducing feedback.

That sounds right or their moms made them doilies to give their guitars that homey look.
I know guys who have stuffed foam through the sound holes of their hollow bodies for that reason.

No one can master every aspect of guitar playing, they just get better everyday.

He he he ... I just had this mental image of one of those really wild heavy metal bands doing an acoustic intro ..... the camera zooms in and the lead guitarist is revealed to the world as just another guy with a loving mother ......

You don't see it as much recently as you used to-but sound hole covers on electric accoustics are used to prevent the accoustic sound from being picked up by mics so that only the tones the amp signal sends are added to the sound mix---they are thick black plastic -which just pops into the sound hole, and can be purchased at most music stores for a few dollars.Scott

Kyser makes a guitar humidifier that probably could be used as just a soundhole cover

Hi
I use one in my Maton at times. Very occasionally I have had the opportunity to play in front of large crowds (5000+) and if I am doing some solo guitar thing at something like that I put the feedback buster in. I don't worry about it too much for small gigs.
I used to be in a rock band that played at a lot of largher venues (500-1000) around Sydney and I would also use it then, as the sounds guys were normally deaf and would crank everything.
The drummer was also insane, and so it was always too loud....

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
