Wah-Wah vs Volume Pedal

I don't have clue about the these items other than I know the wah-wah has been around a long time. I have never used either one.

I'm interested in using one or the other with electic slide. I'm trying to learn and emulate the standard tuning, single string slide style of George Harrison. In some of his works you can obviously hear wah-wah's being used. Someone mentioned to me a few months ago that perhaps GH used a volume pedal instead of a wah-wah. There is little or no detail at all about GH's style and the equipment he used.

I'm seeing wah-wahs and volume pedals grouped together on some of the Internet shops like musiciansfriend.

Could someone explain the differences between the two? And perhaps if there's a Harrison head out there, they could enlighten me as well!

Thanks

Les

For slide a volume pedal can be great. Pedal steel guitar players poretty much all use volume pedals. Wah pedals are also lots of fun. I don't use them often, but I have fun with it when I do. It seems to me there might be some that switch from volume to wah, but that could just be my memory failing.

seems to me that using a volume pedal with a fast toe-heel rocking produces a sort of faux wah-wah effect. And there are some pedals that double as both. Scott

A Wah is a filter that slides up and down the frequency spectrum. Since it filters out sound it can seem like a volume control. It's sort of like the thing that players hold in front of a trumpet and open and close. Wikipedia sez this....

"George Harrison recorded his own song "Wah-Wah" on his solo album, All Things Must Pass, on which Clapton also appeared. He had previously used a wah-wah pedal with The Beatles, such as in the chorus of "Across the Universe"."

i recommend a multieffect pedal that can do both, then try it and see what it sounds like...
