Resonator guitars were attempts to amplify the sound of guitars before electric guitars came into the picture. Simply put, resonator guitars can have one to 3 cones inside the body that act on the same principal as a pre-electric megaphone.
Wooden body resos are mellower and used in county and bluegrass. They usually have a spider bridge. Hawaiian style is usually played with this kind.
Metal body resos are louder and have a harsher tone. They have what is known as a biscuit bridge. Very, very popular for blues. The more cones, the harsher the tone. National Steel tricone guitars have a distinctive tone that people either love or hate. I prefer the single cones myself. Google for them and you will be buried in links.

I really haven't heard it put in those terms. It wasn't a great success because it didn't make a huge difference. It was more the unique tones that saved them from oblivion. A new National goes from 3 to 5 grand.

They are louder than an acoustic guitar. The stories I have read about old blues guys playing a resonator is that they could go into a crowded juke joint and be heard over the noise. I have a friend with a National and it is loud.

Even my funky Jay Turser Resophonic is louder than you would expect. It has a thin body and is shaped more like a Les Paul than a traditional resonator. But the cone causes the whole body to amplify and project the sound. I can't play it after the kids go to bed. It would wake them up. I can play my acoustic about as loud as I want and they can't here it.

Typically blues guys play their resonator in an open tuning using a slide of some sort.
