My guitar
When I decided that I wanted to learn my husband was watching HSN? or one of those. We purchased a Jay Jr. model Jay-TRD. It is okay, the only thing I don't like about it is it seems to not want to stay in tune after you practice for awhile. I bought my son and electric acoustic off of ebay for about half and it sounds much better than mine. When I get better I would like to buy a better one but I want to get educated and buy one that is of better quality. Any suggestions??

I looked at the Jay .jrs on e-bay. They are a pretty inexpensive guitar so the quality is not going to be high. Probably not worth putting money into it to take care of the tuning problem. What country your in is going to determine the range of affordable guitars.
Where are you and how much do you want to spend. I assume you want a folk acoustic.

There are currently 179 guitars on e bay in your price range. Pick a couple that look good to you and we can look at reviews.

I went down to Sam Ash and played their guitars for about an hour. They had a nice separate room with them all on stands and hanging on the wall. Even though my abilities are limited I felt comfortable strumming away. I was looking for an acoustic electric in the $200 range. I finally settled on a Brownsville that had a nice feel and sound. It's a generic no-name brand but it played well and I could directly compare against the rest. I'd recommend doing this for your first guitar.
If you buy a guitar on-line you'd better plan on taking it to a luthier and getting it setup (adjusted). If you try them in your local store you might be able to find one that reasonably setup off the shelf.

May I suggest the Samick line of guitars. I just purchased their Worthington D5 dreadnaught and love it. Sounds great, keeps in tune very well, and looks like it should cost a lot more. I paid $200, the electric acoustic electric in that line goes for under $300. Check out Gregg Bennett design Samicks at their web site. And No, I don't work for them, just pleased with my purchase.

I'll second the Samick- it's a good learning guitar. It's what I started out on. I picked mine up in a pawn shop about 15 years ago....

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
