String changing neck support thingy

Helloo

I recently changed my strings (successfully) for the first time. My first attempt left few winds on the tuning pegs, and my "high E" sheered off at the bridge.

So I got a new set of strings and managed to get them on. They're doing really well now. They're stretched in and tuned and sounding nice.

But...

... I can't go through that hassle again.

My guitar was all over the place, and I didn't want to put it flat on the carpet in case of fluffage.

So I've been looking at getting a stand to support the neck while I change strings, to stop it slipping around and trying to escape.

I saw a stand set on Ebay a few years ago. It was like one of those wall hangers with the two prongs facing up, being supported by a steel cross on the floor. There was another piece that was a horizontal padded bar, also supported by a steel cross.

But I can't find anything like that when I Google. Anyone know what I'm on about?

I wouldn't mind something like that, but I think I may prefer something that would fold up and fit in my hard-case.

Could anyone recommend a neck support/rest thing? Money is an issue, so I probably couldn't get anything fancy, gold plated and diamond encrusted. Just something of decent quality that does it's job well.

Thank you.

I just lay the neck on a small soft pillow about in the middle of the neck. First, I already had it and second, it works for me.

The only one I've seen is made by Fender, it's a bit pricey for what it is but it would fit in your guitar case here's a link, they're half the price in the U.S. even with shipping they might work out cheaper.

FENDER GUITAR TECH WORK STATION - U.K. International Cyberstore

I like the look of it, but I can't pay that for it. Thanks anyway though.

Thats a really good idea. I'll give that a go next time I change strings.

I've found this on Ebay, but the only other pictures I can find of it show it supporting an acoustic. The body of the acoustic lies flat on the ground, with the support being the perfect height to hold the neck and keep the body flat. I don't know if it would be any good for my Strat though. Just found it on the same site and page as that Fender one aswell.

I'll try using a pillow, and if its ok I'll just stick with it.

I bought a little tripod thing, Forgot to use it last time because it's a bit of a gimmick.
If you are really apprehensive, then sit on the bed to do the job. Guaranteed not to scratch the guitar.
After you've done it a few times the guitar stops struggling and will sit patiently while you do the job. Bit like a kid really.

If our guitars had as many strings as harps, would we change them as often?

I have one of those Planet Wave ones and they're fine for electrics and bass. However, after seeing the cushion suggestion above, I might try give that a go next time.

I usually put on old thick bed quilt on the kitchen bench and do my string changes and other maintenance there.

Well it looks like I won't bother buying anything now. I think I might put it on my bed with a pillow under the neck next time I change the strings.

These are great ideas. I thought I'd be better off using some specially designed gear, but not anymore.

Thanks.

I hadn't thought of using a pillow neat Idea, glad you got a solution Matty Ryan, I thought the Fender gadget was a bit over priced for what it was, I worked out I could make something similar for under a Tenner might do it as a little project as it could be useful for working on a guitar.
