What's the purpose of an accoustic/electric bass? I looked at them once in the local music store and the guy said if you're looking at them so you can play bass without an amp, it won't do it. That's what I was looking for, so I didn't pay much attention to what he said after that. Now I'm curious. Why buy an accoustic bass?

Hi Nutty, from my experience with them...they're not loud enough acoustically in a un-plugged jam session. By themselves they're fine for thumpin and recording, but definitly need the amp for other settings....Just my opinion

I had friends who would do just fine joining in with an acoustic bass around a picnic table. Strictly for intimate settings or recording

I am a bass player trying to learn guitar without a lot of success. Some acoustic bass guitars have a much better sound than others. Some of the cheaper Deans seem to play louder than most but Allthumbs is right, they will not work in a band, not loud enough. They are good for sitting around a campfire with other acoustic instruments or playing in the living room as long as nobody else is amplified.

They do have limited uses, probably good for beefing up an acoustic song and like the guys said be good for round the campfire, I don't know if eCowboy would agree but if you're a bass player they'd probably be good to have around the house or as a travel guitar if you fancy playing around without having to plug into an amp, also acoustics are always useful in a power cut, if you've only got electric then you come to a halt in a power cut with acoustic the band can play on

Yes, they are good for practicing and great for situations when you don't want to haul an amplifier with you. I was looking into buying one a while back but didn't like the size of them. The bigger the acoustic, the bigger the sound but I could not get comfortable with a large acoustic bass in a sitting position so stuck with my "thin" electric.
