Ikea Hacking

For those of a DIY bent, looking to kit out the home studio etc. I can recommend a trip to Ikea with a tape measure to check out their wooden boxes and storage stuff.

I put togther this mixer/power amp case from one of their "Snack" boxes - it`s tough, real wood and cost me about 20 quid all in - a huge saving over a pre made item.

Apparently the "rast" bedside tables (GBP 7.00) are a perfect fit for 19 in. rack mount gear too - you just need to paint it up and add the stripping.

ikea hacker: hack bedside tables into music studio racks

Nice. We recently got an Ikea here in Orlando. It's quite a place. My wife likes to go there just for the food court.

Hmm, pretty cool. An Ikea just opened about 3 or 4 weeks ago in the 'burbs just north of Cincinnati here. You couldn't get near the place for the first two weeks!!! They are still so busy that they use a shuttle system in the parking lot.

I visited one a long time ago when I lived in Philly. At the time, I didn't get it why everyone was so excited........uhm, still don't get it. I mean, it's a nice store, neat place, clever ideas, but SERIOUSLY!!!
In Cincinnati, folks were camping out overnight to be first in line!!
It was written up in the local paper a couple of times.

Not sure if the crowd is smaller now. May be worth the visit to see if I can find something I can use for Music and lessons and such.

Thanks for the tip!

Nice Hack there Will, liked the studio racks too, we had an Ikea opened down here recently, they had tailbacks too but I think it was only for the first week, flatpackings cool as long as you can read the manual but this hack proves the you can just throw the manual away and make whatever you want which is much more fun

80% of my furnishings are from Ikea. My wife loves the place. The kids too.

The wife bought me a shelf unit w/castor wheels for me guitar stuff & amp for Sing $19/- (USD 13/-). I guess she got tired of the disorganised state my workspace is always in! (see pic).

A great buy.

However, I dread going there for fear of buying things that we don't really need!

Here`s another hack - this time an Ikea "Rast" bedside table - now a 12" floor monitor.

I had hoped to get two from one bedside table but I couldn`t get enough depth to accomodate the drivers that way.

It`s very solid and sounds quite good too.
