Guitar painting

I've been looking at some cool custom designs on guitars such as these and am tempted to try do paint a design on one of my guitars but don't know where to start. Do I need special paint or would any regular paint work? Do I need to take the existing finish off? Any sites that say how to do this?

Yes you need to take off the old finish. Car paint works really well. You can even get paint with sparkles in it for a real custom look. You would need a sealer too. Lots of sanding in between coats. I am sure you will be able to find a how too link somewhere on the net.

ReRanch has a lot of great information about refinishing. They also sell paint and supplies that a lot of builders / refinishers speak highly of.

Hey PD , sounds like a great project .
You shouldnt have to re-move the finish from the guitar your going to paint , just sand it well ( taking all the shiny off ) then use a primer to seal off the old paint .
Then ( making sure your top coat paints are compatible with your primer .
Not all paints are compatible with each other , Lacquer will not go over an Enamel base product , but an Enamel will go over a lacquer base .

I have been an Automotive Re-finish Technician for 30 years and I may be of alot of help here

I would suggest using a Base Coat Clear Coat automotive paint system ( but very expensive I might add ) , and requires an Air brush and a compressor to apply it .

You could use the Model Car paints in spray cans , this would work also .

May I ask what your thinking of doing ?
Will it be some type of mural , or just a few different colored strips ?
I have painted just about everything that can be painted in my life time , no guitars yet , but rifle gun stocks , stoves, refrigerators , boats jet skis , and even a coffin , for a little girl that was murdered many years ago , as it came in damaged at the mortuary
and no one would touch it ( I fixed it and repainted it for free ) as no one wanted to do it .

You can also use India Inks from the art store and use a rapidograph pens to draw your design on and then clear it using a clear in a spray can to protect your design .

Thanks for your help all.

Right now, I wanna see about doing something more than just changing the colour. I was thinking of doing a grim reaper (from one of my favourite shows) like this

Is it possible to do an actual picture with spray paint?

Yes that could be done , but it would be easier with an Air Brush .
Its what most custom painters use for details and murals .

Actually thats would be fairly easy to do , compared to some of the more detailed grim reapers I have seen on custom vehicles

Look around the net for custom motorcycle paint jobs and you will see some incredible stuff .

They have a new actor for Daisy and Rube will not be in it. Everyone else, George, Mason, Roxy are returning with the same actors.
