Amp

Can you play a Bass through a normal amp? Thinking of getting a bass but ca't afford the amp to go with it.

I would advise against it - it would be too easy to blow the speaker(s) apart.

If you can only afford one amp, buy a bass amp and play your guitar through it too. I have a peavey microbass that is considerably lighter than my guitar amp so I use it when I go to jams and open mic nights. It ain't great but it does the job, doesn't do any damage and with a stomp box in front it probably matches most 'normal' amps of a similar size/wattage for sound quality.

Don't play bass trough a guitar amp. It will kill the amp sooner or later.

The bass won't kill the amp itself, but you'll probably smoke the speaker pretty quickly. I played my bass through a couple of my amps before I bought a bass amp, but kept it at very low volumes to avoid damaging the speakers. Guitar amp speakers aren't designed to handle the low frequencies of a bass.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
