Pat Metheny sound? Hollowbody guitar?

Does anyone know what effects would be good to try in order to emulate the pre-1990 Pat Metheny sound. I have LP deluxe w/ mini buckers, standard SG and a Fender sss showmaster. Amp is a Vox ad30vt. Was wondering if a hollowbody would be necessary to acheive that sound. I'm also into the Yes- Steve Howe sound as well as the pre '85 Rush - Lifeson sound. I know those guys played hollowbodys in much of their work. Would purchasing a hollowbody be the logical next step in trying to capture these sounds? Or is it mostly effects? Would you guys let me know what hollowbodys you play and what effects you recommend, and give me some pros and cons about the different models so that I have the tools to be an informed buyer. Thanks

Stalkofta, I have a natural finish Oscar Schimdt OE-40 that's a Chinese copy of the Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II hollowbody. The knock on the Oscar Schmidt is that the quality control can be a little suspect. Mine was perfect, so it was a really good option for getting into the hollowbody sound. I got mine on eBay, although the natural finish is very hard to find.

I also have a Boss GT-3 Guitar Effects Processor that gives me the ability to shape my sound in a lot of different ways. Again, this was an eBay purchase.

Look around for some good deals, and I think you will be able to find the sound that you are looking to get.

I don't know if a hollowbody is necessary. I imagine you could get the sound with the right amp and/or an FX processor. HB pups would probably help too. But getting a hollowbody might be inspirational. I have a Dot. It's a nice guitar and the price is good.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
