What Strings???

OK, I just picked up the guitar, 5 or 6 weeks ago, after many years and I'm seriously working at it this time and the practise is starting to pay off. I'm playing a Yamaha FG770S with .012-.054 Martin Marquis phosphor bronze on it right now. They sound OK. Bought those 'cause that's what I used to use years ago, but I don't really know why. I was hoping some of you might give me some direction on what to use. I don't remember there being so many brands before.

I use Martin Marquis as well...I prefer the Mediums tho (13's) on my Yamaha LL6

If everything has a point, well then I must have one, too.

Most brands you find in music stores are fine. It is a matter of personal taste which you prefer.

Thanks AT, but I was hoping for a little more info. What's the difference between 80/20 bronze and phosbronze? What about coated strings? Nanoweb, Polyweb? Do they feel smoother and reduce finger noise, like they say, or is it bull? I'm certainly willing to try several sets to find what suits me best, just hoping to cut the list down a little.

Nano and Poly eh? You been looking at Elixirs lol.
I personally find the elixirs to be superior on my acoustic (Breedlove) for two reasons:

1. The Breedlove has a lot of bass so I like the brightness of them
2. I do find that they sound good 4-5 times longer than the non coated strings which justifies the hefty price.

3. OK, I know I said two but this just came to mind: The cut down on fret noise.

I prefer the Nano over poly, I find the polys tend to shed their coating faster.

Thanks Wayne. I'll try a set of the nano and see how I like 'em on my Yamaha.

I like the Elixir Nanowebs also. They came stock on my Taylor 110e - I'd never played them before, but really like the sound and feel. They seem to be holding up pretty well too.

I personally use Elixirs on my Washburn accoustic. They always sound sweeter than other strings I have used. They are more expensive, but to me they are worth it. However, as you say the choice is endless.
