Whats GAS?

I'm probably gonna sound like a complete idiot for not knowing this but I've seen the word/shortening/expression GAS used over and over at these forums which I've never heard before in terms of guitar playing. I haven't been able to figure out what it really means and I didn't want to ask because I would just sound stupid but here goes anyway.

Guitar Acquisition Syndrome, or Gear Acquisition Syndrome. It refers to the "urge" to buy new guitars, amps, pedals, etc.

Now you have done it. You have opened the door to decades of nose pressed against the window syndrome and hearing the phrase from your wife, "What, why do you need another one."

I too was wondering what GAS was. Now I know what I have now. My wife and daughter call it an addiction. Id admit that I have this addiction though. But I see nothing wrong with it.

No, No , No! Never admit it's an addiction, remain in denial, and put your energies into lame excuses as to WHY you HAVE to have a NEW guitar.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

GAS is something you should never admit to having ... except to your friends on this forum. I've never experienced GAS, although I now own eight guitars and already have the ninth in my sights. The need to own another guitar or a new guitar is the refreshing wave which keeps us on track as guitarists. It is the sole factor which can overcome the dreaded boredom which causes so many aspiring musicians to abandon their future in music. There must be millions of people out there who could've been guitarists if they'd stuck at it a bit longer. But no! They gave up because they couldn't see their future as musicians with collections of beautiful instruments.
I haven't really identified any forum members who have GAS. Most avoid it by acquiring a new guitar or amp. I'm sure there would be some here though, and I for one will respect their anonimity.
Just to confirm my theory, check for yourself the number of people who abandon music, and how many instruments they own. On eBay you'll see many guitars for sale, but they are from people who only have one instrument to sell. They have never given themselves the opportunity to experience GAS, never experienced the thrill of teaching a new instrument some new tunes.
Don't ever become a servant to GAS, but respect it for the opportunities it will afford you to continue on your musical journey.
