Pedals and combo amps

As much as I like the Vox DA 20, the single tone knob has alot to be desired. Id like to add an EQ pedal to control the levels of the bass, mid and treble, but not sure how that will effect the amp over all. When I plug in my multi effects pedal i have to use the bypass or it really sounds bad tone wise (not a problem with the peavey for some reason I can add effects from both the amp and the pedal and it still sounds good). No biggy staying in bypass mode I don't guess it would just be nice to use the amp effects a bit more then depending more on pedals.
