Guitar Straps, How Good are they???

I bought some Dunlop strap locks recently...I knew nothing about strap locks prior to the purchase...I'm just a hobbyist and had always just hooked my strap over the standard issue strap knob and left it at that...

...anyway...

...I mostly play a heavy Les Paul and I'm not sure if the strap locks I bought are really worth anything. They don't seem any more secure than the simple plain knob that all guitars come with.

Anyone use stap locks?

Know of any good ones?

Are they even worth buying?

Some clarification...

All the strap locks I see in the store are fancy high-tech thingies with quick release buttons and all sorts of stuff.

All I want is a nice solid, simple (probably no buttons) device that will keep my strap from slipping over the knob.

Those fancy quick release devices do not instill any confidence in my at all.

I use strap locks, highly important as once the strap is broken in and losens up it can slip off. It has happend to me twice and luckily I managed to grab the guitars before they the floor.

I use Schaller locks, Why? Well my Strat came with schaller's and they work very well. They are quick release and I find that a useful feature so I can clip the strap on when I play standing up and remove the strap when I sit down.

I have never had an incident on the guitars that I use strap locks on and at least one of my guitars is in the +€1000 price range so I find it is a must have to protect my investment!

Many Moons ago, when I had LP, I did NOT use strap locks....until one night, due to some moving around on stage, the strap managed to pop off the "simple knob" several times over a three set period. Talk about losing concentration! Next day I got some locks.

Currently I have locks on my Strat and my Dean Evo Special Select. I have not yet put them on the Ibanez. The strap is still not broken in and it is a bit of work putting the strap on. I feel pretty comfortable with the light weight of it and the strap tightness that I don't see in the immediate future any need for them.

But for a Les Paul, yeh, oh yeh!! If you don't feel any confidence in them, I don't want to sound rude, but are you sure you put them on correctly? Mine did not come with instructions and , well, some folks need a map to find.....well, are you sure they are on right?
(don't mean to imply anything )

Good Luck!

I've been using Dunlop strap locks for years. Yes, they are totally save and worth it. I can't tell you how many times I've nearly ko'd my LP when I tried playing it with no strap locks. There's nothing worse than playing live and literally losing it right in the middle of playing.

The first thing I did when I got my new PRS was to go out and by Dunlop strap locks. I'm sure Shallers work just fine, but I just stuck with what works for me.

The work great, but you have to install them the right way or they are worthless. If you need more info on installing them, let us know.

I use these:

StringsDirect.co.uk » Jim Dunlop Lok Strap

Very cheap, very effective, very simple.

You NEED straplocks.

I use the Dunlop Straploks also (the ones Solidwalnut is talking about, not the ones wjp01908 linked to) - they work very well. I'm in the process of building a guitar right now and I have a brand-new set sitting in the box waiting to be installed on it as soon as it's done.

If you really don't like strap locks, you could always just slip some big, tight-fitting rubber washers or o-rings over your strap button on the outside of your strap, or try the ones in wjp01908's link. Or, you could go the REAL low-tech route and use duct tape (don't laugh, some guitarists actually do it!).

I'll add tie wraps. I put a small tie wrap on the post after the strap. It's not 100% sure fire, but much more secure than nothing. And it's cheap.

I use some which are almost exactly like that... different brand, but identical design. Hard to think of a better way to invest $2 in the safety of your guitar.
