any Fender experts?

is the fender highway one really 100% american made? (made in usa and usa electronics
the price $750 tells me there's a catch, other american fenders are like 1000+

can any one tell me some facts about the fender guitars?

if you have $800 would you buy the fender highway one or the Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Electric Guitar (i love to have both )

I'm far from an "expert", but I'll give it a go....

The Highway 1 Strats/Teles are assembled at Fender's plant in Corona, CA - so yes, they carry a "made in USA" tag. The electronics are the exact same as used in both MIA and MIM Fenders - CTS pots and CRL switches. The major difference between the Hwy1's and the MIA's is the body finish - the Hwy1's have a very thin, satin nitro finish. Some people like it, some don't.....I've played a few of the Hwy1 Teles, and really don't feel strongly either way about the finish. People who've owned them for any amount of time say that the finish "relics" very quickly and easily (i.e. shows dings and wear from playing) - a desirable trait for some, while others prefer their guitars to stay looking brand-new. Some have polished them up using rubbing compound and/or very fine sandpaper, and the pics I've seen show that they can get a pretty good shine on them.

The MIA's have upgraded pickups (Samarium-Cobalt, which some like and some hate), and they tout the neck as having hand-rolled edges (gives it more of a worn-in feeling). The MIA body has a nitro-over-poly finish which is thicker and won't ding/wear as readily as the Hwy1.

FWIW - on another guitar board, the Hwy1 Teles get pretty consistently high reviews and are well-liked by just about everybody who's bought one.

My choices, in order, would be:
1) Hwy1 Telecaster
2) Hwy1 Stratocaster
3) Les Paul

...but that reflects my personal preference of Teles and Strats over Les Pauls. You'll definitely get varying responses on this one, as it's a very personal choice.

I agree with Stratrat. But then I own an Amer. Deluxe Tele. with a third pickup in the middle. Sort of gives me one foot in the Strat camp with the five way switch. I love the Strats also so my tele really gives me both except for the whammy bar. I am a die hard Fender man. Something about the neck that really feels right and the sound. Not as much inlay on Fender as Gibson but they don't cost as much either. Gibson has come out with some less pricey models and I am sure they are fine. The main Gibson that I like are the SG models. When it comes to Accousic I drool over the Gibson Dove, Humingbird and all the others I can't afford. Love them and they almost always seem to go up in value and sound great.

I have heard that you have to be careful with the Nitro finish even to the guitar stand you sit it on. Some cheaper guitar stand have a warning on them "Not for nitro-finish guitars". Any way I hope you get the one you really want and wish you many years of playing happiness.

Danny

Hey...also be advised that Fender guitars have a scale length of 25 1/2 " while Gibsons scale length is 24 3/4". Some players find the shorter length of the Gibsons to be more comfortable to play, some prefer the Fenders and some players are equally comfortable with either. I own a Strat and an LP and find them equally comfortable. I mention this only to reinforce the suggestion that one should play any guitar before purchasing it as it is not only the sound that matters but how comfortable a guitar feels in your hands as well.
That being said, the Highway 1s that I have played were really nice guitars, especially the Teles!
Cheers,
Wierdsley
