Practice guitar
As I am unable to take my guitar to work with me I was wondering what is a good carry along practice guitar to purchase.
I would need something rather small something that may fit into a backpack ,I have heard people speak of these but I knew if i would check here someone could lead me in the proper direction,
Thanks
Allan

If you search a site like musician's friend for 'travel guitar', you will find about 4 pages of examples. I'm really not sure if any of them will be great. If you trust your office space, you could always get a second guitar and keep it there and not worry about dragging one back and forth.

Even though I was learning acoustic, my take anywhere guitar was a very secondhand, extremely cheap strat copy. Not plugged into an amp, it was very quiet, but it's main advantage was that it was much tougher than my acoustic. Still use it when I play late at night.

Hofner do a travel guitar which is quite cheap, you'ld have to check out the reviews though, Martin also do a steel string backpacker acoustic guitar which is a bit more expensive but it's a Martin, here are a couple of links. Hope it helps

You could play to the patients Aunkster but give the Leonard Cohen songs a miss and I wouldn't play The first cut is the deepest by Rod Stewart either

And if you're doing patient transport with the elderly there's "Constipation Blues" by Screaming Jay Hawkins!

This is the one I'm looking at getting.
Washburn Rover RO10 from zZounds.com!
The reviews seem pretty good and it sounds okay. I was surprised actually at the sound.

Dear Aunkster,
Well a 3/4 Guitar Is Pretty Small.. I have a small room which is Squished. And A 3/4 guitar is nice, small, lightweight, and easy to carry around. But, If You Want a Super Small Guitar A 7/8 is the perfect guitar....But I Don't Prefer It. So....Guitar Center Has A Good Deal On A $ 60.00 + Shipping and Handling, Dean 3/4 guitar. That Is the guitar I have and it's very convienient to travel with.

I bought one of the 3/4-size Squier mini-Strats for a travel guitar. I have a Fender Mini-Deluxe amp for it - tiny little battery-powered thing. Pair it with something like that - or even better yet, a Line6 Pocket Pod and a pair of headphones - and you've got an extremely compact travel rig.

There is a guitar out there which breaks down to the size of a tennis racket for travel. Saw the ad in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, but can't recall the name. Had to be July or early August I saw it on the stand.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
