Can anyone tell me what effect this is?

YouTube - Neil Zaza - I'm Alright

I love the sound of that effect.

I only have the laptop to listen to it with, but it seems to just be an overdriven valve amp, and possibly some delay to thicken the sound a little - but theses speakers are not the best for picking up on that.
That sort of tone is normally achieved by turning up the master volume on a valve amp and really letting the power amp section work hard.
Another aspect is the air the speakers are pushing out. That makes a big difference too.

IMHO I think is a plain distorded sound in neck position pickup and little too much bass area to EQ on amp or in processor. And offcourrse goo amplifier.

But to me it's look like almost same style as mr.Vai

Sounds like a fuzz tone to me. Like dejankuki said probably the neck position. You could get something similar with a big muff or multifx and humbucker pups. It sounds somewhat like the tone I used in this song on the lead line. Played with a Schecter C1 and Korg AX3G...

He most likely has a preamp built into his guitar to get that tone.

I couldn't tell you specifically what effects Neil uses on "I'm Alright" but here if you go here: Neil Zaza - Gear/Tools
it will tell you what effects arsenal he has at his disposal.

Wow, that is a really nice tone!

I'm gonna just have a guess, then visit that link and see.

Boss MT-2 Metal zone (since I agree it's like Vai and he uses one), Digital Delay for echo, Noise gate (almost certain of those 3). Compression/ Sustainer (or high gain on the amp as other have said), Blues Driver or Overdrive/Distortion. Maybe some autowah too in one place.

Whatever it is I sure like it!

The green pedal is an Ibanez tube screamer, right?

What are the orange and swirly coloured ones?

Yeah, the green one is an Ibanez Tube Screamer. The orange one looks like an MXR Phase 90, but I'm not sure what the swirly colored one is.

Lol I'm a bit confused about how to actually get the sound. But it seems like you need more equipment than a regular Roland Cube 20x and a guitar to get that kinda sound

Chances are you're not going to be able to buy all the same equipment he has so you need a multiFX unit. You can get similar tones with it.

Funny you should say that. Two weeks ago I was watching a friend play those kind of tones on a Zion through a Cube 10X. I will ask him if he has active electronics in his axe. I don't think he does though. He has been a rock guitar teacher for over 20 years with his own school. I may just be his fingers.

He just got back to me. He has active EMG's 81-SA-SA. And the tone control is bypassed in his axe.

I have no idea what that means but I'm sure it's nothing I have.
