Resonator guitar

I am considering the purchase of a resonator guitar. I don't want to break the bank - maybe $250 - $300. Does anyone have feedback on resonators that they own or have played in this price range? Thanks

My best friend just bought one about a month ago. I'll catch up with him tomorrow for some details. I know he paid $250 for it and I know he wanted one with those speaker looking thingy's on it. I'm not into dobros to much, but i'll see what he says and what brand and model it is.

  Dobro

Not sure but I believe Dobro is a trade name of Gibson for their version of a resonator. They are probably a little costly. If you have a guitar shop around it would probably pay you to actually go there and try out a few to get a feel for the sound and playabilty to get something you would enjoy playing.

Best regards

Danny

There was a deal on one from Musicians Friend for less than a deuce, powdermpainted brass body, I think, Their own brand of Rogue are inexpensive, and Samick makes a couple wood body resos at a decent price. I own two Samick guitars and the quality surprises a lot of people.

You have to decide if you want a reso with a biscuit bridge for blues or one with a spider bridge for country and bluegrass before you make a purchase.

Can you describe the difference between the two different types of bridges, and the difference it makes? Thanks!

Heres an article by Michael Messer from a couple of years ago, gives a bit more info about Resonators, as you can see he owns one or two.

When i was looking it was based on a budget and there were a few in the same middle price bracket. I bought a wooden body Monterey resonator because it had a built in pick up but more importantly the best mature tone unplugged. 7 years on and i wont part with it.

Here's the best one-page intro to resonators I've ever found, which includes sound samples of the various types: Resonators Explained, by Paul Kucharski

Johnson is another company that makes decent resonators which won't break the bank.

Oooooh... never looked for an Agile resonator before, but they have a gorgeous all-brass blues machine (round neck, biscuit bridge) for $399. Agile ABG-1 Resonator at HomeOld
