Gear storage

I have a question concerning storage of guitar gear. Where do you store your equipment? My wife says our bedroom should not be a warehouse and even though I really don't have all that much equipment, it is beginning to look like a small music shop so I have to reluctantly agree with her. Can amps be stored in a well built but unheated garage without damage?

6string, I would dearly like to have a studio but convincing the Mrs. might require extensive "begging" if you know what I mean.

I wouldn't. Moisture gets into the electronics and it is toast. I have friends who have lost stuff storing it in unheated basements. There must be a corner somewhere for your stuff in a friendlier environment.

Just organize the room neatly so your wife won't be so mad about it. Of course if it looks like a wartime warehouse, no good.

I store all mine in the office/computer room. Well, we call it that, but it's rapidly being taken over as the 'music room'. It's getting to the point where I can hardly move in here between 2 computer desks, file cabinets and all the guitar stuff!

Hey Tom, do you happen to have a spare room in the house that you could use or convert into a music room?

Agree with allthumbs on the garage no matter how well their built they will attract moisture and mildew would be an issue if they're left for any amount of time, don't know how big you're amp is but we have a bed with legs high off the floor so I put stuff under the bed but it depends on what type of bed you have, I suppose you could throw a cloth over the amp and use it as a bedside table.
I have guitars dotted around the house there's always a corner in a room that isn't used so they don't get in the way. Another option would be to turn the garage into a studio, damp proof it put a carpet down, if you have other stuff in there you could buy a shed and store them in it which would solve that problem, a lot of people do convert garages into rooms, if your serious about your music it would be money well spent an extra room would probably put value on your property as well.
On a lighter note and in no way a serious suggestion, if all else fails you'll have to buy the Wife a blow up bed and ask her to sleep in the living room this will free up a lot of space.

Cheers

Chris

I keep my guitars at strategic points throughout the house IE: Living, dining & bedroom. That way it doesn't seem so cluttered.
I once put one near (in) the kitchen, my wife put two slices of bread between the strings (then complained that the toaster wasn't working), I took the hint.
Amps would be fine any place you're happy with your computer/s.

I have a clever ploy for my storage.

They are now ornaments and part of the furniture, my acoustic is stored in my living area on a A frame stand. The electrics are wall mounted kind of like hanging a piece of art around the living area. It all looks very tastefull and my girlfriend likes it a lot as it looks classy. The amps and my pedal board are stored in the spare room with all the cables tied and neat.

The humidity varies wildly from season to season in our house (35-99%) so all guitars are stored in hardshell cases when not in use. They are sprawled all over the house though. At some point we are going to empty out the 'spare' room and turn it into a music room (or possibly an exercise room).

I think the lesson here is.......prenuptial

"Guitar(s) and related equipment may and most likely shall be stored in any location(s) in the house, chosen by their owner, specifically and primarily the living room and or the matrimonially bedroom, without complaints or retribution, verbally or otherwise."

Yeah I think you'd have to make sure your Guitar Gear was safe before you entered into any serious relationship

Finally got some pics together...

We just built this in the Garden, as the gear was really starting to crowd the rooms...
