Jumbo Frets

I think i made a mistake buying my Guitar. It has Jumbo Frets and i think it's why i am finding it so hard to play chords. When i try to hold the strings they tend to slide around on the frets. I guess jumbo frets arnt ment to be pushed all the way to the fretboard... i would post the link to the wiki explaining why but it wont let my post URL's.

should i buy a generic strat to learn chords on? is anyone else learning on a guitar with jumbo frets? if so is it harded to learn on?

Jumbo frets are shredders answer to a scalloped neck. The idea being that the frets are so high that pushing the string to the fretboard will help with bends because it will already play sharp. A guitar with jumbo frets takes some fine control because you don't want to press the strings down hard for the above reason. Not a good axe to start on in my opinion. They are usually played by experienced musicians.

Is it a lean mean metal machine you bought? Those things take abit getting used to. But not for me cuz I STARTED on a shred machine!

It's a ESP LTD M-100FM i bought it because i like the shape of stratocaster's and it seemed like a good guitar for the money $279. and it had really good reviews.

I dont know much about guitars but it has good weight to it and seems well built. nothing seems wal-martish about it at all.

I will be getting an amp next week (roland cube 30X) i am just trying to learn a few riffs on it right now so when i get the amp i can play something.

But Chords seem to be tricky to play on this thing then i rememberd it had "Jumbo Frets" so i googled them and found out thats why im having problems.

If you're gonna play rhythm a lot on it, try upping the string gauge from the 9's that are probably on there.

I use 9's on my strats for lead work ( I bend and vibrato a lot) and power chords, but they won't chord well at all, whereas my GS1 (handmade LP junior type with jumbo frets) plays open chords well but only with 10's or thicker.

There ya go... a legitimate reason for collecting a few guitars, they need setting up differently for different uses imo

Get .10's preferably Heavy Bottoms by Ernie Ball. That'll help.

If it continues to give you problems seek out a qualified tech and have them "dressed" or filed. Its an inexpensive guitar... and your axe. Have it "tuned" to suit your playing style... don't adjust your style for one guitar. Adjust the guitar.

Bending .10's will build finger strength too.

Remember, wherever you go... there you are.
