Just an odd question.

I was wondering how come guitars can't be worn around your neck. It's an odd question. I think it's because they're too heavy so they'll strain your neck??

Some small parlour and classical guitars can have a neck strap that clips to the sound hole. I have friends who have permanently injured their backs playing 10-13 pound LPs even with a wide shoulder strap over long periods of time.

I agree with you there allthumbs. I have a Epiphone Black Beauty and I have to use a wide strap when playing it. Last year we were rehersing for up to 5 hours in a day for about a month, and my back was in agony.

We are talking about holding up an heavy guitar for gigs maybe 4 hours a night Friday and Saturday as well as practices. It takes a lot of time for it to start biting you. Your young enough that your body will take the abuse for some time before you have to worry about it.

Now is the time to worry about it though. I sometimes wonder why somebody hasn't come up with a back-support brace for guitarists. Bit like the sort of thing you see builders and storepersons wearing now.
Just wouldn't look too cool, I guess.

Some bands just starting out hire a trainer to show them how to support the weight of a guitar properly right from the start. The wider the shoulder strap, the better.

Too true AT my LP just about whips my rear end anymore. And the strat aint much better lol. Years ago someone told me that if I was going to perform while standing up then thats how i should practice. soo...... either or I have to go to the back cracker 2 times a month now cuz of it...... Will I stop playing or performing??? you got a better chance of seeing God in Hell playin handball with the Devil.

Don't worry yourself too much Jessica. "Walter Trout" a former member of the "Bluesbreaker's" uses a specially made guitar strap and he play's a strat, which in compararison to a "LP" is very lightweight.

You can't rock out when you look like your working at home depot! Especially in the world of heavy metal, looks ARE everything.

(feel free to quote that and put it in a sig or something)

My PE teacher can help with that. I've got this 10lb RG hanging on just 2 inches!

That is not a good thing. Get a much wider strap. You can get custom straps that rock if you are concerned with image.

Joe Satriani used a Dimarzio cliplock 2' (same as mine) before he had his custom ones made. He uses an Ibanez JS series and those things basically feel like an anchor. I've picked one up before, so I know. And the RG series is basically a cheap offset of the JS series.
