Johnson Guitars

anybody know where I can get johnson guitars in England? I have seen the review of the JD-27 and love the look of it and it had a promising review for tone and general quality. ITs in my price range too but I would really want to play it first - or has anyone played it or got one. I am doing more fingerstyle than strumming generally

any ideas? It seems totally america only? If not I am looking at a taylor and a takemine as alternatives which have taken my fancy (so not all bad!!)

Cheers

Aaron

Aaron,

There was a local Johnson dealer nearby me. He had a decent selection and I got the chance to play many of them. Unfortunately, this was a couple of years ago.
(He is still in business but has a problem getting stock in due to the increasing costs and the downright nasty competiton from a Guitar Center and a Sam Ash both within 15 miles of him.)

I do know that the more expensive models (still cheaper than Taylor and most Takemines) played very nicely and sounded quite nice. True, not anywhere near some of the Taylors, but still quite nice.

They seemed to be made fairly well. Good finish. Nice dressing, that is fret work and nuts and bridge all seemed well put together.

Personally, I would not have too much of a problem buying one if it played as well as a few of the ones I played. Of course, there may be the stigma of NOT having a "Name" brand guitar. That seems to be an issue here in the states.

If you are looking for a decent alternative, have you looked at Ibanez acoustics or acoustic/electrics? I have been playing some of those in the last few weeks and they are very nice. Good sound, acoustically as well as plugged in, nice finish, good quality work from all I can see. And a decent price. Usually less than $500 US. Don't know what that translates to in pounds. but it may be an option for you.

Hope this helps.

$500 would be around £260-280 which is within/under my range but I havent really considered ibanez or I havent had a go on one yet as I thought they were better electrics? I am popping to my local store this week so i will see what they have in. Thanks for the advice

I dont understand the props of having a big name? I suppose quality goes with the masses. If I pick up a guitar and its made by a "nobody" If it feels right looks good and sounds great then it shouldn't matter should it!

This particular johnson JD-27 just looks great so its good to know what Johnson seem to be good build and sound quality. Its just whether they are available over here or not!!

That was what I first thought. I have an AG85, a semi-hollow body archtop. Electric, of course. I am extremely pleased with it, so when I saw the acoustics hanging there on the wall of a local dealer, I tried one, then another, then another!! The acoustic/electrics that were just over $300 US, all played really well. Most have maple tops. But some really nice ones had spruce tops. Ooohhh! They were really nice... But the maple tops sounded quite nice, too. Couldn't really tell a difference once they were plugged in.

They have some pure acoustic ones that were very nice for around $250 and up, too.

Uhm....not now a days. Seems you really need to play each one and take a real close look at the one you're thinking about getting. I've seen, let's say in electrics, both Gibson and Fender, some REAL discrepencies in quality workmanship on the same model. 2 LPs, both same model, one had frets that felt like they never saw the working end of a file, the other, smooth as glass.

Fender, two strats, same model, one the neck was put on at an odd angle. The strings were almost floating out over the edge of the neck where the neck and body meet. Nearly impossible to play up th eneck. the other one, no problems. I pointed it out to a sales clerk at Sam Ash. He hadn't even noticed it.

So, regardless what manufacturer you go with. Try to put the excitement to the side, take a very close look at every angle, front, back, from the pegboard down the neck. From the bridge back up to the pegboard. Real close.

Put it back on the wall hanger or have someone else hold it and then look at it from an observers point of view, not the one holding it. Then make the purchase.

Not to scare you or anything, I've just seen too many little things pop up as soon as guitar was brought home.

Well, it shouldn't matter, but there are always the "purists". Personally, I opted for a Dean Evo Special select over a GIBSON Les Paul. It had the tones I wanted, played extremely well, weighed half as much and was only $500. Versus the LPs that were running around $1400 a the time. A couple of guys I know thought I was nuts. Me, Didn't care, got what I wanted and I'm STILL Happy!

Matter of fact, a guy I play guitar with at Church bought a Johnson ES335 copy. We made a minor adjustment to the neck and nut and the thing absolutely SINGS! He paid $250, used, for it.

If it sounds good, feels good and it's in your price range, it may just be singing YOUR name!!!

GO for it!

A definate problem I have is excitement. I walk into a shop and my eyes light up and I want to buy them all but I am learning to take my time.

My first guitar is a taurus...never heard of the make and cant find the company anywhere. Its rubbish. It looks really pretty, its a lovely blue colour with a dark fret board but I bought it for £40 form a mate who was given it. It was great to learn on after I re-strung it but I notice the strings arent even and the neck is bent but it was definately great to learn on.

10months on and also armed with my squire strat (which is great by the way) my needs are to progress and get better technically and for that I need a well built guitar for low-mid price range and I will be checking everything as you said also as i dont want to buy a guitar and not be happy with it

Anyways basically I am massivley hooked on guitars ever since I picked one up last year...the sad thing is that i was thinking baout learning for about 10 years....shame I didnt do it earlier
