Strings are purely preferential things. You could buy her extra-lights which are 9s. They go down to I believe, 8s. But the lower you go, the thinner the sound. I'd stick to 9s or 10s.

If your daughter's just starting out, she may want to go with a lighter guage such as .09s as they are easier on the fingers. Personally, I think .08s are a little too light for a beginner, as they're harder to "feel" on the B and high E strings.

After playing for a few months on some real old strings (don't know what brand) and BGS strings (real easy to snap a string off with those I found) then got some D'addies 10s and wow I love em. Just the feel of them is amazing I really can't put it into words.

I think 9's for your daughter just starting out will be perfect. D'addario's or Ernie Ball Slinkys will do you fine.

I use D'addario 8's and they sound quite good. Especially for all the heavy metal and hard rock stuff i play.

Depends a bit on what type of guitar she`s playing - on an acoustic I`d stick with 10`s as a minimum - you need the mass of the strings to drive that soundboard and give it some tone. 10`s are probably also a good choice for a beginner on electric too - they are a bit less fragile than 8`s, deliver a better tone and are likely to need less tuning.
Of course lighter strings may be easier on the fingers so your mileage may vary.
I`ve always found Ernie Ball to be a reliable brand

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
