What acoustic guitar should I get? (Semi-Beginner)
I have a Fender Strat. right now but most of the songs I would like to learn are played on acoustics. I've browsed online for guitars these are some I've considered on purchasing;
Washburn DK20T Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar
Yamaha GigMaker Guitar Pack
& Washburn DK20T Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar
However, I'm not too sure on weather or not Washburn and Mitchell are good guitar brands, and the quality of their guitars.
Can someoone clarify that up for me and also recommend some good guitar models for a beginner like myself?
(my budget ranges from 100-200)
Thanks

I just got a Zager 50CE easy play guitar. Man, it is soooo much easier to play than other beginner guitars. I sound so much better. Check out zagerguitar.com. Check out the "discounted" guitars on the website. They might fit your budget. I just can't tell you how happy I am with the neck, frets, and sound of this Zager guitar.

Check out Seagull guitars. They might be a bit out of your price range but are one of the best guitars for the price. Also, look at some of the Yamahas . Good luck!

rducki09,
Got a lot of different stuff here, and one happens to be a Zagar 80ce.
There guitars are modified for easier playing. Of course they have extra light strings which you may consider in your choice of guitars for beginners many good models.

Hi rduckie09, I like the yamahas, there good to learn on and there should be one in your price range, washburn is a good brand, if you've got a local music store, why don't you pop in and ask to try a few guitars out, they'll probably play some for you if your a bit nervous about playing in front of people, it's good to listen to a few as you know your buying one that sounds good to you.
The shop will look after you because if you're happy you'll go back again.
Good luck

Just a couple of thoughts from me. I am by no means a good player. I like to play and I would love to play well and oneday I might get there.
My first guitar was bought on spec by me. I didn't research anything I walked into a store and the sales guy sold me a guitar. As it turns out it was a decent guitar and a beginners guitar, it was a Cort Earth 200N.
Fast forward a few years and I'm GASing for something new because the Cort, while a good guitar, just doesn't seem to be the one for me anymore.
I went into a guitar store, browsed around and played a couple by myself. Some felt good to me, others not so good. I made note of the ones I liked and looked up some info on them online. The Internet has done marvelous, such as this for us.
I was GASing bad and wanted to buy something right away but I resisted this time. I went to other stores and played different models and some of the same models. I noticed that some of the same models played differently that before. I revised my list and started lurking through some forums for feedback on what I liked, just like you're doing. The one comment I got over and over was to go and play them all. It doesn't cost anything to play them in a store. Get comfortable with them, then talk to others that own them and find out why they bought it. What they played it against, etc.
Most of all, take your time and don't try to fit a guitar into your budget for the sake of getting one sooner, if and when you find what you like, then buy it. If that means saving a little longer it just means you have more time to play more guitars.
I ended up buying a used guitar when all was said and done and went from my new "beginners" to a classic Guild DV-52 that can compete with almost anything, IMO and I got it for the price I was willing to pay.
Many guitars are out there and if you can bide your time a bit and get what you want you'll be much happier in the end.
Sorry for the winded post. Good luck, keep us informed.

'76 Guild D-25
'72 Guild D-25
More to come....

I tried many acoustics before buying a tanglewood TW45Ns. It's a nice size.( the jumbo I started on is far too cumbersome). It Has a cutaway to get to those high frets. (again my first one didn't have). It has some good electronics in it so that if you want to amp it or record it, it's easy enough.
But most importantly when I picked it up in the shop, It felt right.
Hope that helps.
Here's a pic if your interested.

Look into the Gregg bennett line from Samick. I got a solid spruce top Worthington D5 with a TKL gig bag from Guitar Factory for $199 free shipping. Grover tuners hold very well, nicely finished, plays easy for me out of the box, may want to lower the action a tad if you're used to an electric. You can see some videos at the Samick site

I just bought a Yamaha 735s ($349). I read probably 100 reviews on it and didn't find one bad one. It sounds great and you can't get a better guitar for the money. They also have a 700 and a 720. Here is a great link to check them out...
Go to www . musiciansfriend . com to check them out
Hope this helps!

Hi,
The Brand is not important. (well almost not important). The most important is that you can play it well. I would suggest that you take 3-4 hours and go to a big store. Play everything and then decide.
Take it from someone that has purchased to many Guitars of less price (and lower quality). Do not restrict your budget too much. My experience is that you can start with 350$ for a decent guitar.
Once again. Go and play lots of guitars and then decide, because they all play differently. I started with a Johnson, went to a cheap Ibanez, and finally when to a Takamine for real money.
Good Luck!

I paid $199 for a solid spruce top Worthington with a very nice TKL gig bag free shipping from the Guitar Factory. I will never sekk that guitar, sounds great, has grover tuners and a nice red saleal mahaogany back and sides, six ply binding. Check out the Greg Bennet site see some videos of the different models. I believe the Regent series runs about $159 or so. The Guitar Factory or Guitars East has good prices on all their stuff from Samick.

My first guitar was a Yamaha Gigmaster solid top I got from Costco for Christmas 2005. I thought it sounded great. I did take it to a local guitar shop and had them change out the nut and saddle with tusq as well as lowering the action to facilitate playing fingerstyle easier.
I'd never heard of Mitchell, but while looking for a 12 string I went to Guitar Center and fiddled with a couple. I found the Mitchell and loved the sound, got a nice solid top for $195. Mitchell makes a 6 string dreadnaught just like the 12 string I got and I've been tempted to get one as well because I like the bright sound the evoke.
Like many players it didn't take long to get GAS. My brother gave me an old Martin D-1 that he had. So that had me up to 3 guitars in a matter of 3 months after I started playing.
Since then I've added a Hollow Body Austin Jazz guitar and just bought a Tacoma Papoose from e-bay. I've only got 2 more on my list for now. Tacoma C1C Chief (pre-fender era) and a 60's Strat.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
