There's hardly anything better than getting a new guitar, is there?

A friend of mine just got one. Here is his review of it. I may pick one up myself in the new year.

This was built in Indonesia for Fender. Basswood body, maple neck and fretboard, medium frets. Has a beautiful vintage blonde finish, about 85% opaque, seems thinner than the usual Fender finishes, and looks a lot like TV Yellow...Most pics on the web shows an almost cream color, trust me, this is definitely a mustardy yellow--looks great with the black pickguard. Pickguard is huge, and matte-finished, so it doesn't show pick scratches.

Tonewise, it's got a regular Fender humbucker with coil-split on the bridge, and a Strat pup on the neck, or better said, in the middle. I tried this with my Amptramp, and with a Peavey KBA100 that belonged to Dad. No pedals. The poisitions sound as follows:

- Humbucker: It's quite trebly, maybe because it's so close to the bridge. I like it very much, gives a great punk sound for rhythm, and a cutting sound for solos. Overdrives the preamp easily, must be pretty hot.

- Humbucker with coil-split: This gets right into Tele sounds, although the volume goes down noticeably. This works perfect for clean, chimey, jangly tones, although it might drive a pedal OK.

- Humbucker + middle pup: Sweetens up the bucker, still has bite, but mellower, great blues tone.

- Humbucker split + middle: Beefs up, almost overrides the split coil, as above, works great for clean rhythm or soloing.

- Middle pickup: You get Strat tones, hands down, and it's good for all the things middle Strat tones are good for! Quite warm, rounded sound, nice for mellow, slightly overdriven solos.

Issues? Some frets sticking out a little bit on the sides, and I already too care of them with some careful filing, and I adjusted the intonation. Action is pretty low, no buzzing. The matte-finished neck felt "dry" at first, but some FingerEase and lots of playing during the weekend, and now it's soooooo smooth.

Some people might think I'm crazy, but I'll keep this thing bone stock. I just love the way it is. Light, playable, brash, loud, vintage-y...This thing is just great.

Oh, and I paid just $119 for it brand new, off Guitar Trader.
