Something for us Less Godly mortals.
You know I never really considered Jazz...I just never had that vibe, and in all honesty, didn't really want it. I envy jazz musicians musical talent and knowledge, but the style of music never appealed to me much and because of this I have never really been able to do it, at all.
I have not listened to enough to be able to emulate the sound in any meaningful way.
anywho, got cornered in a rehearsal room the other day and hte bassist and drummer just went all jazz vibe on me and I had no choice but to bluff it.
Crap as it is, and it is crap by any playing standard, it 'sounds' jazzy. I was impressed with that alone, to actually make it sound jazzy was quite impressive for me.
Thought I would share with the thought, well if I can sound a bit jazzy so can anyone.

Cool. As long as you keep hitting ninths, elevenths, thirteenths, aug and dim chords, you will sound jazzy whether you want to or not.

I think you did a cool job considering you got ambushed Fong, improvising is a big part of live Jazz so I reckon you did well and sounded ok. Check out these guys doing freestyle Jazz, if you get to the end of the video I'll buy you a drink, apparently these guys are really good on CD, not really my cup of tea though
YouTube - Murphy-Futterman Quartet, Avant-Garde freestyle jazz !

I'd freak out if I was in your shoes!
Funny thing.. when I was young I started off listening to Jazz fusion before "jumping ship" to rock/hm. Spyro Gyra, Casiopea & Di Meola were among my favorites. It was mostly cos of the licks & chords. But when ACDC let loose Back in Black, there was no turning back.
Ocassionally I put on some jazz and try to play along. And my fingers just wanted to play pentatonic scales and it felt really 'empty' w/o any distortion!!! LOL

Its ok Star, you don't owe me a drink I couldn't make it.
I enjoyed playing although I was ambushed, and I am in fact looking forward to having a crack at it again.

For an impromptu set I would say not bad, not bad at all.

Sorry for inflicting that on you Fong, I only lasted a minute more out of curiosity really but the pain got to me, I enjoyed hearing you play a million times more, you were good as you had to make it up on the spot, look forward to hearing more from you

Whew!!! I only lasted 1:09!!
Fong definitely was much more enjoyable to listen to. And, yeh, considering he was sort of ambushed into it, I thought he did a respectable job of it.

I jumped ahead in the video just to see if there was any actual music in there.
Fong, be proud, you were ambushed and managed to actually play something with a groove. Good going.

You know i been playing 20 years now and I never considered myself a lead player, and still don't I lack the finger speed and technique of a 'real' lead player.
I am feeling ever more comfortable on the fretboard though, seem to know where the notes are next that I want to play with feel rather then with a scale shape.
It's been a long time coming, and I think the lessons I have been giving other people have helped alot, since it has forced me to arrange the knowledge in my head in a presentable order, and when I do that it seems to sink in more.
Thanks for all the nice comments

I'm not big on jazz either. I just never really got it. But I guess that might change.
But I must say that was pretty cool.
I miss the comfort in being sad
