Kirk's weekly Guitar lessons
Since the last Newsletter, I've done lessons for 'The Long and Winding Road'. The first is the verse section, the second for the bridge section. It's in our favorite key, G. For Intermediates and Dedicated Beginners.
Here is the verse:

I also did a remake of a lesson I did years ago ... it was originally called 'Only a Hobo' because I'd remembered that Bob Dylan had made a song of this traditional tune and called it that; it was pointed out to me recently that a player called Joseph Spence played it as 'There will be a Happy Meeting' and the great Ry Cooder called it 'Great Gift from Heaven' on his CD. Whatever it's called, it's a great tune, made for dropped-D and is a joy to play once you get it down. I played this one on my new steel string acoustic, handmade by the legendary Michael Palm of Australia's Sunshine Coast.

Guitar for Beginners and Beyond Community
We're closing in on the 22,000 members mark at GfB&B now... one year old this month, and growing at about 80 members per day still. Clancy is always coming up with new ideas and new forum features. Look out for a new lesson format coming out in the next couple of weeks. This will make searching the lessons MUCH easier. Also, I'll mention it again that if you're into home recording and you have any mp3s or videos you would like feedback on, GfB&B is the place to do just that. We're a friendly bunch!
It's all happening here:

The Guitar Chord
Slide Rule
If you look at the right hand side bar of any page at GfB&B, you see an ad for the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule'. It's a downloadable PDF of an adaptation of the slide rule that comes with my book
PlaneTalk. This version requires you to print it out, do a bit of cutting and folding, and it turns into a folded-sleeve-with-6-inserts affair that show you all positions for all the main chord flavors. It also, by its very nature, shows you how the guitar works, how guitar music can be seen as shapes that move up and down the fretboard retaining their original flavors. It's well worth the $10 and by buying it, of course, you'll be helping to keep this huge site afloat ... we're up to about 6 Gb of bandwidth per day now, and we need all the help we can muster.
Here's a direct link to the order page:

Donations
As you know, GfB&B is a free site, and apart from a couple of bucks per day (literally) revenue gererated from the ads on the home page, we have no sponsors. The site eats through close to 6 Gigs of bandwidth every day now which Clancy and I pay for. You can help out though, by simply going to this page:
http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/fo...llspaypal.php? and using the form there. Paypal handles the transaction. A big thank you to those who are donating ... we appreciate every cent! Once you've donated, you get a star next to your username to reflect your generosity.
Thanks to all our starred members! We certainly do appreciate it.
Don't forget the Guitar Chord Slide Rule mentioned above, too... !

PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book
I found a very long thread at another forum today all about my book PlaneTalk. There were many sceptics, players who rightfully doubt any claims about 'miracle methods', and there were many who had already bought the book/DVD. The PlaneTalkers were unanimous in saying that it's a very simple but extremely powerful lesson that it teaches, and thankfully (for me), none of them spilt the beans on what exactly the 'trick' is, the mindset that turns your fretboard into friendly, familiar, well worn territory ... the whole fretboard ... no matter what the music is doing.
As member Chaotic Kittie from Sweden puts it:
"PlaneTalk certainly was the best guitar investment I've ever made, besides my guitar itself."
You can read a bunch more testimonials here
PlaneTalk Testimonials and a bunch in the GfB&B forum, bottom of the page. So, if you'd like to be able to look down at your fretboard at any given moment in any given tune and see all the possibilities -- chords, double stops, harmony, melody -- then drop in and learn more about it. It's not cheap, but it will be the last book/DVD you'll ever need to buy on fretboard navigation.

Slide Guitar in Standard and Dropped-D Tunings
I did a bit of a revamp on my other other site,
Slide Guitar Web Ring - Bottleneck Guitar where I promote my recently finished DVD on the art of playing slide in standard tuning, or better yet, dropped D. Open tunings are great but there's really no need to change anything ... standard tuning (or dropped D) is a very rich environment for slide once you know where to look.
Have a listen to some of the tracks at the site's home page ... they're all in dropped D ... and if you'd like to learn all about it, order the DVD!
If you already know how to play slide and you're looking for a new one, I also sell beautiful heavy slides machined from solid brass at that site. I just received my latest batch of 100.

Online Jam
It's the beginning of a new era: the other day I sat here in my Tamborine Mountain, Australia, office and played live, in real time, jamming with my old Internet friend (and fantastic twanger) Jim Heidinger who was sitting in his office near Sacramento, California. We both wore headphones and were going through a program called Userplane. Not only that, but a whole bunch of other people were listening in also. We're doing it again soon and I'll announce the time and place here in the future. very cool indeed.

That's it for this week, enjoy the lessons, enjoy the site!
