Here is part 2 of "Blackwood Stroll". You'll need to repeat part 1, then instead of playing the harmonics at the end, play the C#7 that begins the tab below. I've left a little bit of lead in on the movie from part 1 so you can hear how this neat key change occurs.

The part 1 section is in the key of D; part 2 modulates to F#m, and does so via the C#7 chord, which is the V chord of the key of F#m. Remember that V chords like to precede I chords, so here I've hit a C#7 out of the blue. Even though it's a real jolt out of the key of D, our ears instantly hear the dominant quality of the C#7 and are satisfied with the next change: to F#m. F# would have been OK to, but by going to F#minor, I'm going to a chord that is in the key of D, so it's even more satisfying. F#m is the iii chord of D. So I've kind of turned the iii chord into a i chord.

It then changes key again, this time to A, via its V chord: E7. Same kind of thing: I've pulled an 'outside' chord in, made it a 7th, and made it a V chord. V chords herald I chords, so an E7 acting as a V chord leads to A, the I. By then adding the 7th to A, I'm making it a V chord, that of D, the original key. Adding the augmented note stregthens that even more, DEMANDING a D chord. And then I'm back in D, ready for part 1 again.

Of course, you don't need to know all of this stuff, but it helps if you do.

The progression for part 1 is:

| - - C#7 - | F#m - - - | C#7 - - - | F#m - - - | C#7 - E7 - | A - - - | E7 - - - | A - - - | D - - - |

The finger picking is much the same for part 2, same feel, based on triplets. In this section, the chord shapes are the first thing to get under your fingers. You'll see that in the C#7 I use my thumb to grab a bass note or two. It's not considered good technique, and I try to avoid it, but it really works well for this shape chord. The thumb can grab a 3 on the bass string very easily. I also stretch out of the shapes for a couple notes. You have to do this to keep the others ringing. Practice it slowly until you get it right, only then speed it up.

The tab and midi below start on the C#7 chord, about 3 seconds into the movie. You'll hear it. The augmented chords I play at the end are the same shape, moved up 4 frets. Just as diminished chords repeat every 3 frets, augmented chords repeat every 4. A slight variation i flavor occurs using the 7th, as I do, but they're both basically A augmented chords.

The little in the tab are rests ... think of them as blanks ... I left them in the image this time. The symbols indicate notes that ring on. I'm sure there's a cleaner way to tab this out in GuitarPro ... I just don't know it yet. The chord diagrams indicated are the basic shapes around which I create the part. Don't feel like you have to hold every note in them down at all times, since the melody notes move around.

I'm also the author of PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book. The lesson that this book, slide-rule and DVD teach is the most powerful of all: the 'trick' to seeing the entire fretboard as friendly, familiar territory. If you're beyond the beginner stage -- you know your chords, scales, maybe even modes -- but you're still wondering how to turn it all into music, how to invent and improvise, how to access all the bits and pieces, then this is the book for you. You will also be able to join the private PlaneTalkers' Forum and discuss the simple visualization technique with me and many others. - Read more here .

Testimonials

I purchased Plane Talk about six months ago and have to say it is by far the best book I have come across. I do have Fretboard Logic, but I like Plane Talk much better. It is clearer an easy to follow. I have learned more from this book than all the other ones I have. Plus, the slide rule is a GREAT tool. Highly recommended!
